Coliseum emptying fast
Two-thirds of refugees leave Arizona or find housing; rest to follow

Two-thirds of the Hurricane Katrina evacuees housed at Veterans Memorial Coliseum have found homes elsewhere in Arizona or left the state, and Gov. Janet Napolitano is hoping the last refugees can be placed by Friday.

Relief efforts moved at an equally dramatic pace in Tucson, where all the 89 evacuees housed in the city's Convention Center have found permanent or temporary housing.

Napolitano's new goal beats that deadline by nearly three weeks and puts relief workers on a much faster track with evacuees who have special needs.

Besides food, clothing and a place to sleep, evacuees at the Coliseum receive medical care, counseling, job placement, housing offers and other services.

5. A lot of them are choosing to stay in Arizona because they LOVE the

dry heat. I can imagine. I am from Iowa originally and had heard all the hooplah about how the dry heat is so much nicer than the humidity of midwestern and southern summers but man, once i moved down here to yuma i fell in love with it and can't stand humidity any more. Even 120 doesn't feel that bad if it's dry, I can't imagine living with the humidity of the bayou, Iowa is bad enough.

on edit: my "source" in making this statement is from a red cross official who ran the training I went to in Tucson last weekend, he made several comments to having heard this being one of the reasons the displaced Gulf Coast residents said they loved Arizona and wanted to relocate. Also heard this on the radio, in effect, many times.

6. I've lived in both AZ and the Midwest

Prescott, which is a mountain town, ain't that bad, but I still hated the Phoenix burbs.

You're right in that a dry 90 degrees in Prescott or Flagstaff will feel like about 75 in Iowa.

But I can't stand heat of ANY kind! Winter's my favorite season!;)

However, had I only known Louisiana weather for all my life, and never experienced a snowstorm, I might see where the displaced might want to stay in Arizona.:)

8. I was born here and this is what I say about dry heat...

"like a blow torch!" LOL! I'm in Phoenix and, lord, it gets hotter every year. I know what you mean about the humidity, though. I spent a couple years in Newport News with the Army. There were times I thought I was going to drown standing on dry land! I couldn't breath.

Anyway, Janet did real good by these people. She put together a special job fair and took them around to tour apartment complexes. I heard one guy got a job driving a city bus. It's funny what you can do for people when your heart's in the right place and you're not worried about your own ass all the time.

and friends. One man went to California to stay with a friend.
