Watchdog slams US forces for media deaths in Iraq
14 Sep 2005 21:09:19 GMT

Source: Reuters

NEW YORK, Sept 14 (Reuters) - A media watchdog criticized the U.S. military on Wednesday for consistently failing to investigate the killing of journalists in Iraq by its forces, and said the Pentagon was losing credibility as a result.

The report by the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, or CPJ, said U.S. troops had killed 13 journalists since the U.S.-led war started in March 2003, and at least 40 other reporters had been killed in the conflict.

"Several of the 13 deaths suggest indifference by U.S. soldiers to the presence of civilians, including members of the press," the CPJ said in a statement.

The report also examined the deaths of 21 media support staff who were killed in Iraq, two by U.S. forces.

1. Journalists' group claims U.S. military failing to probe media deaths ..
.. in Iraq

NEW YORK (AP) -- A journalists' group said Wednesday that the U.S. military hasn't fully investigated the killing of members of the media by American troops in Iraq.

Some 13 journalists have been killed by U.S. troops since the war began in March 2003, according to a study released Wednesday by the Committee to Protect Journalists.

At least 40 other journalists have lost their lives covering the conflict, said CPJ, an independent organization that works to safeguard press freedom worldwide.

Another 21 media support staff have been killed in Iraq -- two by U.S. forces -- the CPJ report said. <snip>

9. Yes, you beat me to it.
When I saw the headline of this thread, I thought "Jump in there, QUICK, and correct those figures."

Of course, when you have US media reporting these "figures", you're only going to get GIGO.

GIGO = Garbage in, garbage out.

7. Remember the lovey-dovey inbed relationship at the beginning?
It was announced so quickly - as if it was in their game book for the war from the very beginning. They probably never drempt that some of them would be killed by their own.

And the journalistic team from Al Jazeera never thought that they would have a U.S. aircraft team take them out on the roof of a building.

Ugly. So ugly. But the brass is still probably getting a kick out of having been able to try out all the new toys they developed for boots down action and their new war theories and strategies.
