Schwarzenegger All But Declares Reelection Bid
By Robert Salladay, Times Staff Writer
CLOVIS, Calif. -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger all but declared today that he would run for a second term next year, saying, "Let me tell you, I am not in this for the short run."
Speaking at a special election campaign event in this Central Valley town near Fresno, Schwarzenegger was asked by an audience member if Californians would get "a chance to vote for you again."
The governor then revealed what his campaign staff had been hinting for several days: "I'm going to make an official announcement on Friday, this Friday. I believe very strongly in follow-through. Follow-through is the most important thing. If you start something, you've got to finish it."
The Republican governor, who came to office in 2003 after winning a historic recall election that ousted Democrat Gray Davis, is scheduled to attend a campaign rally in San Diego on Friday to sell three initiatives he is supporting on the Nov. 8 special election.
An announcement for a 2006 reelection campaign is designed to add a boost to Schwarzenegger's initiative cause and send a signal to financial donors and supporters that he intends to be around for another term....
