Mississippi readies trailer cities for homeless

Gulfport, Miss., Sept 14 (Reuters) - Since she lost her home and her husband to Hurricane Katrina, Crystal Dedeaux and her four children have been living in a classroom at a local elementary school.

But her days there are numbered. Emergency relief officials plan to move her and more than 1,000 people like her out of the school shelters by this weekend so students can return to their classrooms.

Storm survivors like Dedeaux will be housed instead in temporary "trailer cities" that the Federal Emergency Management Agency and local officials are scrambling to pull together all along the storm-ravaged Gulf coastline.

Harrison County, which encompasses some of the worst-hit towns in Mississippi, this week found sites for 280 trailers, which are arriving fully furnished and will be rent-free.

<snip>

Families displaced by the hurricane will be allowed to live in the trailers possibly as long as five years, according to the agency. It estimated it would have to provide direct housing -- trailers or motor homes -- about 200,000 households.

3. Oh, those will just be for Helliburton's workers.
And other contractors.

2. Trailers will do well, so long as there's no hurricane or tornado
that comes along.

7. Trailers do much better than nothing.
Tents are the other option and they really do lousy in hurricanes and tornados. There are no other alternatives here. What would you suggest?

4. Kudos to Northrup
Several of my friends were left homeless after Katrina destroyed their homes. Northrup went out and bought brand new RVs for them to live in while they get their lives back in order.

6. This will be a good change for them. It's a step up in living for them.
(Thanks, Babs! We'll be mining that one for some time to come.)
