Nepalese forces were searching yesterday for two British army officials abducted by Maoist rebels from a mountain village, scouring the rough terrain on foot in a hunt that was expected to take days.
Hundreds of soldiers and police were deployed to look for the two Britons who were kidnapped along with three Nepalese helpers on Sunday night from Lekhali village, about 300 kilometers northwest of the capital Katmandu and close to a rebel stronghold.
Police official Krishna Shrestha said by telephone that authorities did not know the status or whereabouts of the kidnapped men and it could take at least two days to find them.
The area is a mountainous region with no roads. The troops were searching on foot in territory where the rebels could easily attack.
