Man Rescued in New Orleans After 16 Days
Man rescued in New Orleans after 16 days
September 15, 2005 - 12:49AM

A rescue team saved a 74-year-old man from his flooded-stricken home 16 days after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, officials and reports said.

Edgar Hollingsworth was found unconscious and emaciated laying naked on a couch in his home yesterday but is expected to survive. His Pitbull puppy was also saved.

A rescue team from California that looked through the window of Hollingsworth's locked and darkened home in Lopez Street in the Broadmoor district of New Orleans saw a human foot hanging over the couch, the team told Knight Ridder newspapers.

Lieutenant Frederick Fell of the National Guard broke the rules by slamming down the door to investigate.

1. Well they deserved whatever they got for not leaving!
I actually heard this tonight. A friend of mine's boss told her this. These are the people that we will find dead. Those who were too sick and old too drive themelves out.

8. I bet I know why he stayed.
I think the message got out that anyone going to the Superdome could not bring pets. Meaning, if you have pets, you can't come in.

That's why he stayed home, to protect his puppy.

Let me second that. SHAME ON YOU, BUSH.

11. This reminds me of something.
The ones who could have left ( who had money, cars, health) but DIDN'T said "well I lived through Camille so I decided we'd ride it out " or insert whatever hurricane they lived through. They get on my nerves. Rescue workers risk their lives for the ones who could have gotten out, had the money to get out, etc. I saw a lot of people on TV like that who were asked why they stayed and it was that reason and they all admitted they wished they hadn't stayed.

17. My understanding is the more affluent
live on higher ground. They may have gotten stuck in the city and couldn't get out, or accumulated water in their homes, but I don't believe they ended up on their roof tops or in attics.

25. I think you're right. I was talking also about the people
in Mississippi, LA and other states on the beach and places like that. I did see a few white, richer type looking people who were evacuated off roofs in NOLA. The one guy, about 30, said he only had a quarter tank of gas in his car though he had a lot of cash in his pocket and it did him no good because he couldn't buy gas. By the time he decided to leave he didn't find gas stations open. He was evacuated off a roof.

7. Thank Dr. Czuleger, too
for some fine emergency surgery right at the site. Lots of docs, probably some of our best ER docs in the country, have gone down there to help, including some world class docs from our area. Sounds like Mr. Hollingsworth will be getting some excellent care.

9. Where does the blame go for not allowing pets in shelters?
Local policy? Red Cross idiots? Just WHO decides this.

Because the FACTS are that some people (me included) will NOT leave their pets behind -- period.

So the idiots who formulated this anti-pets policy are half-human idiots.

And I think I have found support that my theory that a percentage of the population are non-evolved half humans in this research on the BBC website.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4222460.stm

'Proof' our brains are evolving
Photo of the brain
The changes presumably confer a survival benefit
University scientists say they have found strong proof that the human brain is still

evolving.

By comparing modern man with our ancestors of 37,000 years ago, the Chicago team

discovered big changes in two genes linked to brain size.

One of the new variants emerged only 5,800 years ago yet is present in 30% of

today's humans, they believe.

This is very short in evolutionary terms, suggesting intense selection pressures,

they told Science.

Survival benefit

Each gene variant emerged around the same time as the advent of so called "cultural"

behaviours.

The microcephalin variant appeared along with the emergence of traits such as art

and music, religious practices and sophisticated tool-making techniques, which date

back to about 50,000 years ago.

It is now present in about 70% of humans alive today.

The other, called the ASPM variant, originated at a time that coincides with the

spread of agriculture, settled cities and the first record of written language.

12. lack of space in helicopters, shelters, etc?
I wouldn't leave my pets either. But then again I wouldn't live in a hurricane zone. I just wouldn't live in an area where I'd be fearing evacuation every few years just so I could get a view of the water. I know a couple who is thinking of getting out of the Southeast coast because of the hurricanes. If the people would just move several miles inland....

24. As long as they aren't killed by a Dachshund or a Chihuahua
Of course, we'll need a ruling on all Mastiffs, Dobis, Shepards and all the other (400+ breeds).

And what if the pit bull only mauls ONE child to death? Are we no longer sad?

In the end, though, we could keep the pet rescue ban in place, many people will stay behind with their animals, those two children will die from dehydration, and voila -- problem solved.

26. I agree
I would never leave my pets behind and many people died because they had to choose between staying in danger with their pets or leaving them behind. The majority of Americans love their animals and consider them part of the family, there needs to be a better way.

14. Be sure to read the blog-type stories of the Orange County Search & Rescue
team:

http://www.ocregister.com/blog/rescue/

MANY outrages here. This is one of the TEN teams (700 rescuers!!)who were stuck, at a tremendous cost to taxpayers, in a Dallas hotel for FOUR DAYS, because FEMA wouldn't let them into the disaster area. Then, when they finally got to New Orleans, they had to cool their heels for a few MORE days, because FEMA wouldn't give them orders.

And there's this:
When Task Force 5 was stuck in Dallas at the Hyatt Regency, FEMA officials forced them to stay for four days. FEMA ordered the rescuers to stay in the hotel and have no contact with the 10,000 evacuees living at the Reunion Arena across the street.
Sanchez left the hotel four or five times when he had a free hour and started working at the arena.
He stacked boxes. He bandaged lacerations. He sorted clothes. He distributed food. He has been a firefighter/paramedic for 28 years and he wasn't about to let anyone tell him he couldn't help people.
He said he simply walked around the arena asking everyone, "What do you need?" Then he would help them get it.
Sanchez is good at that.
"In my opinion, it was the right thing to do," Sanchez said.
When the people in Task Force 5 found out that Sanchez had defied an order, he didn't get in trouble.

But I wonder if he'll get in trouble with the Feds, like the helicopter pilot who rescued people against orders.

15. WTF is up with this statement
Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 06:55 AM by Lochloosa
In the past few days, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has ordered searchers not to break into homes. They are supposed to look in through a window and knock on the door. If no one cries out for help, they are supposed to move on. If they see a body, they are supposed to log the address and move on.

How many other people are in their attics dying?

Earlier, they had been frustrated when FEMA delayed their deployment for four days, housing them in the Hyatt Regency in Dallas.

They were frustrated further when they were given the FEMA order that they weren't allowed to force their way into houses to search them.

SOMEONE NEEDS TO GO TO JAIL OVER THIS SHIT!

Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 07:56 AM by ElsewheresDaughter
HE HAS BEEN THERE FOR 7 DAYS AND WILL BE THERE FOR 21 MORE. he called me right from a house he and his son were inside of, double bagging bodies they found so decomposed it was impossible to tell which sex they were. Jim said, "we can not break into any houses only knock and peer through windows" i asked him "what about the attics? there could be weak and stArving people lying around inside that can not respond nor call out that they are alive!"...he said, "there are people like that and the animal rescuers are finding them, they have permission from the home owners to break into the house and rescue their pets, we don't any such orders as a matter of fact we were 'ordered NOT to"...

21. The reasons for not evacuating
are many and varied. I live in an extremely vulnerable area and have been through several hurricanes. Speaking for me and others I know who choose to stay, it is a personal decision and not made lightly. Each storm is evaluated separately. Friends of mine evacuated north as Andrew threatened; we stayed, terrified. They ended up directly in the path of the storm and lost their car, though luckily not their lives. We lost electricity, but suffered only squalls. During Georges, I chose to move to "safer" ground and lost MY car....as well as enduring the eyewall and the surge and a frightening day and night. If I had stayed put, it would have been a rough day and night, but no losses. Please don't judge those of us who stay, unless you have been in our shoes.
