Wiretap Mosques, (Mitt) Romney Suggests

<snip>

WASHINGTON -- Governor Mitt Romney raised the prospect of wiretapping mosques and conducting surveillance of foreign students in Massachusetts, as he issued a broad call yesterday for the federal government to devote far more money and attention to domestic intelligence gathering.

In remarks that caused alarm among civil libertarians and advocates for immigrants rights, Romney said in a speech to the Heritage Foundation that the United States needs to radically rethink how it guards itself against terrorism.

''How many individuals are coming to our state and going to those institutions who have come from terrorist-sponsored states?" he said, referring to foreign students who attend universities in Massachusetts. ''Do we know where they are? Are we tracking them?"

''How about people who are in settings -- mosques, for instance -- that may be teaching doctrines of hate and terror," Romney continued. ''Are we monitoring that? Are we wiretapping? Are we following what's going on?"

As he ponders a potential run for president in 2008, Romney has positioned himself as a homeland security expert: He sits on a federal homeland security advisory council, is active on the issue with the National Governors Association, and repeatedly speaks about the lessons the country has learned from the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and, more recently, from Hurricane Katrina.

1. Hey Mitt...
...if you want to monitor those that may be teaching doctrines of hate, you don't need any stinking wiretaps. Just watch the 700 Club and try to follow along.

3. why not wiretap churches as well?
Especially those with Pat Robertson type preachers, or preachers that think it is a wonderful idea to kill abortion providers.

Romney's idea is based on a false premise, that all Muslims are terrorists, all teach hate, etc, etc, which makes about as much sense as saying all Christians want to assassinate Hugo Chavez because Idiot Robertson said so.

10. Why the hell?
To collect evidence they will never use?

They had enough warning to stop 911 ( if it wasn't MIHOP ) and did nothing with the information.

So they wiretap some Mosques? They won't allow any interpretors to figure out what was said; they won't use anything they collect to save any Americans.

The only purpose I can see to this lovely invasion of privacy would be to give the BFEE a heads up so they can exploit any tragedy to further their greedy powermongering.

12. given that some rwing groups prone to violence
meet together in some Christian churches - would he advocate wire tapping at churches as well? Would the many Americans who attend Christian churches give up that privacy in favor of security? If so- then as a democracy, sadly, that could become policy. But I rather suspect that most would not agree - and that is the crux of all of this silliness. And how does Katrina work into all of this? Is it really being implied that this wiretapping would have helped the response to Katrina - lunacy. More and more lunacy from the right.

do you know why your state is wealthy? do you know why the economy is growing faster than the national average? could it have something to do with the 'foreigners' eager to move to your state and attend those shoddy, second class institutions of higher learning you have there?

a broad swath of the public without evidence. This is an idiot of the first rank and shows he is in favor of profiling as an intelligence strategy. Only dumb republicans would vote for something or someone so odious.

28. Another First Amendment attack?
mosques, for instance -- that may be teaching doctrines of hate and terror," Romney continued. ''Are we monitoring that? Are we wiretapping? Are we following what's going on?"

The first thing I thought of when reading this quote was more of the republican doublespeak, or reverse psychology where we're being told of Romney's 'hate.' But then, reading it slower (a problem I have is reading too fast) I note the "for instance" portion of his quote. Clearly, he doesn't want to limit it to only mosques. But then, to attenuate that first disclaimer, there's the second conditional, "may be teaching doctrines of hate."

I do think we need to be watching those who teach hate, and also those who teach zero tolerance, for the two are intimately intertwined. But what about those who've had the tyranny (hate) of the state directed at them, their family, friends, and their neighbors, only to find out from surveillance that they weren't teaching those things? How does one undo the reputation damage done with the surveillance? (my answer is its never undone)
