Like Senate, House Committee rejects independent Katrina commission
http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Like_Senate_House_Committee_rejects_independent_Katrina_commis_0915.html

Republicans on the House Rules Committee unanimously approved a commission to investigate failures surrounding the Hurricane Katrina disaster, refusing a proposal from Rep. Doc Hastings (R-FL) which would have created an outside, independent commission to investigate the disaster, RAW STORY has learned.

The vote in the Rules Committee, which will bring a vote to the full House floor, was made late last night.

Democrats were outraged by the vote. They note that the Katrina panel will have an 11-9 Republican majority, which will give only Republicans the power to subpoena.

Great.

2. ...this is shameful. I hope there will be a public outcry: where is MSM?
Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 10:42 AM by Wordie
The MSM could do a lot to publicize this, and I sincerely hope that they will. Especially given the President's current polling numbers, there may be a lot of other Americans who would find this completely unacceptable. I hope there is a big noise about it.

3. This should give democrats
in House races next year something to drive home. The republicans believe in cover-ups and abuse of power. They do not want the American people to know the truth.

10. People also need to get the message that
you too will be left behind if you embrace the status quo. Kinda gives a new meaning to LeHaye's series title, doesn't it?

4. What goes around, comes around, IF we ever get fair elections again.
The way the Repubs are acting should tell you that we're probably not going to see fair elections again until we're etching our choices in stone tablets with crude flint tools.

5. This decision underscores the need to have more
people in Congress with a D after their name.

As long as the Repubs are in power, no good Dem has any power whatsoever.

6. They're terrified of this one. Homeland Security is probably a wasteland
of political contributors and repug cronies. They don't even want anyone looking at that!! House members consider every call or letter equal to 10 votes. Get on the phone, keep those letters and emails flying!!! Contact Black Caucus. If it was okay for white, rich, wall street types, it's a necessity for poor blacks or are the repugs indeed racists?

7. Amazing isn't it
And quite impressive in its ability to thoroughly control news, investigations, votes, people. How do they control their own republicans so well? Remember Voinovich breaking down on the floor of Congress in fear of a Bolton nomination, yet turing 180 degrees later? How did McCain go from being outrageously smeared to sticking his head in Bush's armpit on the campaign trail?

Katrina will be a dead issue in 3-6 months, discussed only occasionally, like DSM.

My wonderment is only exceeded by outrage and fear.

Only the Plame issue, with its independent criminal investigation, might stick to someone. And you can believe that won't be easy and it likely won't be resolved in time or in a manner to result in policy changes over the next 3 years.

13. Rep David Drier (R) phone number
I've been calling his office all day and telling
them they are the party of negligent genocide.

I said maybe Drier should leave california and go
find his gay constituents in Mississippi.

Telling them to shut up and stop accusing the dems
of playing politics. Throwing KKKarl Rove in their
faces.

I said they have to choose between their party and their
country.

the number for David Driers office
