Harry Reid statement on Katrina and Bush's speech

In advance of this evening's speech to the nation on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Senate Minority Leader Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, released the following statement:

AMERICA CAN DO BETTER FOR VICTIMS OF KATRINA
by Harry Reid, Minority Leader, US Senate

“The families in the Gulf don’t need to hear a speech from me. And they certainly don’t need to hear another speech from President Bush. What they need is leadership. That’s why we’re here to give our plan to help families get back on their feet, back into homes and back on the job.

“Let’s be clear about what Katrina was: a failure of leadership. The day before the Hurricane made landfall, President Bush received a briefing on the enormity of the storm. But when flood waters poured into America’s Gulf Coast, America’s government sat on its hands.

Just like they will sit on their hands when the new
bankruptcy and credit card laws create even more
displaced people.
The victims of the economic storm will fare
no better than the Katrina victims.
Wait and see, just wait and see.

3. I'm glad he addressed making sure
that the ones victimized first by the flood, then by the Bush administration, will be able to work on the reconstruction projects. In addition, paying less than the prevailing wage will certainly not help the issue of poverty. Neither will tossing out no-bid contracts to his political cronies, nor will putting...God help us...Karl Rove in charge of everything.

The only reason he's bothering to speak at all is to boost his dismal poll numbers, and to be sure that he and his thug friends can enrich themselves more at our expense. I understand the Repiggies want to go ahead with showering the obscenely wealthy with even more riches with new tax cuts, but that need to be stopped. We need to roll back the tax cuts on the richest.

Trust him to use the largest natural disaster to ever hit this country as a way to further he and his wealthy pals interests, and to do it to the detriment of people who have already suffered much, much more than they had to, because of the Crawford Cretin.

5. Slightly fishy on Reid's part for me because....
I was reading the scroll on CourtTV or CNN or whatever channel didn't have a commercial during the Roberts' hearing this morning and it said that Frist and Reid announced that they will lead a delegation of twelve, not counting them, Senators to the Gulf on Friday.

So, I'm kind of thinking that Reid may talk, maybe not a whole speech, and they probably don't need more than a Senators and their staffs and a healthy dose of reporters traveling around in a posse looking for the perfect photo op.

Anybody think Frist will get his staff to take a picture of him in front of all the destruction, like the tsunami incident?

Anyhow, here's a link on the trip...

I hate to be critical of Harry Reid, it's just fishy.

6. Considering that lame defense paper
that "some" Dems in Congress just floated, I'd say Reid and the rest of his crowd seem hell bent on making asses of themselves to please Bush.

11. Yep, I agree...
I hate it when the Democrat who sounds best about this whole Katrina thing in the media is Hillary Clinton, who you have got to think is trying to look good for 2008.

Now, how about advocating the repeal of this abomination- at least for the hurricane victims.

8. Not to change the subject but what has
anyone heard from Loudmouth Zell Miller regarding this issue? He seems to be conspicuously quiet!

10. Yes, he called the loser a "loser." He shouldn't have apologized.
