Casey puts heat on Santorum
By David M. Brown
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Friday, September 16, 2005

Democratic state Treasurer Bob Casey Jr. has increased his lead over Republican U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum in his likely 2006 showdown for Santorum's seat, according to a new Pittsburgh Tribune-Review/WTAE-Channel 4 Keystone poll.

In the contest among Republicans seeking to oust Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell next year, former Steelers wide receiver Lynn Swann, of Sewickley Heights, has jumped ahead of former Lt. Gov. Bill Scranton, the poll showed.

In the Senate race, the telephone survey of 518 registered voters showed Casey beating Santorum, of Penn Hills, by a 50 percent to 37 percent in a hypothetical election, with 13 percent undecided. The margin of error was plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.

A Keystone poll in June showed Casey, the likely Democratic nominee, ahead of Santorum by 44 percent to 37 percent. Recent surveys by other polling organizations also have shown Santorum trailing Casey who, like Scranton, lives in Scranton.

3. It only seems that way.
It's hard to tell if he's running for re-election with the fundamentally insane spewage from his 12th-century brain.

4. Um...no
This race will be among the nastiest in the country, because it will largely be viewed as a referendum on the GOP's demented cultural program, of which Santorum is the primary Senate spokesperson. Remember Santorum also shilled wildly for Bush's defunct social security scheme.

Santorum ain't bowing out, and I hope Casey has his defenses laid out properly, because the national GOP will unleash a shitstorm here in PA to save the last vestiges of their culture war position in the person of the deluded, gay-bashing senator from Virginia (that's what we call Santorum here in PA ;-)).

5. This article is incorrect
In the Senate race, the telephone survey of 518 registered voters showed Casey beating Santorum, of Penn Hills, by a 50 percent to 37 percent in a hypothetical election, with 13 percent undecided. :banghead:

Corrected: In the Senate race, the telephone survey of 518 registered voters showed Casey beating Santorum, of VIRGINIA, by a 50 percent to 37 percent in a hypothetical election, with 13 percent undecided.

6. seems like it was a wider margin last I saw
of course I don't know how much stock to put in a phone survey of 518 people. Yes, this is going to be tremendously nasty. There's a long way to go and alot of mud to be slung so who can say which way this will go at this point although Casey leading every poll I've seen by double digits cannot be bad.

I love how jocks act as if everyone is capable of making it in professional sports. They are sooooooo fucking out of touch with reality.

10. Forward to election night: It looks as though all the 13% undecideds...
...AND another 2% of Casey voters have suddenly flipped and decided to vote for Santorum. The reason: because of the morality and values that the Republicans stand for. And of course, the gay marriage issue was also in play...:sarcasm:

Sound familiar?

13. Casey's pro-life and anti stem-cell ...
... so, voters will be choosing between two pro-life candidates, one of whom is psychotic and one of whom is not.

14. Yes, I know his positions. But thats not the issue because....
...the media spin will be, after the votes are flipped, "Republicans stand for American values and freedom, and the voters just feel more comfortable with those kitchen table issues"....yadda, yadda, yadda....

15. Specter took 64 of 67 counties
last fall. His votes were at least double his opponents in every case. Just saying it seems as if the odds of him doing that well must be astronomical.

16. Yes it does seem astronomical...
...but I'm not surprised. The "magic bullet" man will always have a seat, as long as he wants one. He knows where the bodies are buried, so to speak.

attention in my probability course in college!
I can't believe no one has even questioned it before. I think I will look for info on scumtorum's results. It could be interesting.
Specter creeped me out before he was ill. I guess the best we can seem to get in PA is a slightly moderate repube.:banghead:

17. "Puts the heat on" -- odd choice of words
To me, that invokes the image of the challenger coming up close behind. In this case, they should have said "Casey leaves Santorum in the dust."

19. Will any Republicans challenge Santorum for the nomination? It would seem
that there might be an ambitious Republican out there that would challenge Santorum, given that he appears to be weak and getting weaker against Casey. Maybe even with quiet support from the WH. Rove doesn't like losers.

21. Frist's not running again
He's got presidential aspirations. I think Al Gore should for Senate again (that's if he's not running for President in '08).

We've still got plenty of time to find someone to run against him.
