First Lady: Prepare Kids for Disasters

First Lady: Prepare Kids for Disasters

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- First lady Laura Bush said Friday that young children should learn their full names, addresses and parents' names to speed up reunions after disasters like Hurricane Katrina or anytime a child is lost.

Bush told the story of a 5-year-old boy found walking on Interstate 10 in New Orleans who knew his name, address, mother's name and the name of his church.

"So that's a very good reminder to all of us that we need to teach our children as soon as they can talk," she said during a visit to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which set up a special Katrina hot line with retired law enforcement officers working the phones.

...

The first lady praised the "very heartfelt speech" given by President Bush Thursday night from New Orleans and lauded the hot line volunteers, who include Herman Hargrove, a retired New York Police Department detective.

....

The Katrina hot line is 888-544-5475.

4. In answer to your question,
Probably not. People at that echelon of the aristocracy don't do that sort of thing. Them being in Texas, I'd put my money on a Mexican nanny.

22. Yeah, you caught my drift
From what I've heard her daughters are incorrigible. Just like mom and pop.

She needs to go ahead and teach them their names and addresses.

Considering that their father was a substance abuser for a large portion of their childhoods.

you have to know more are on the way."

The First Lady continued her remarks calling the vice president an utterly useless utterly un-trust worthy sleazebag before she was tasered by Secret Service Agents and quickly led away to a secure location.

"The First Lady will be taking a rest" a spokesman said.

on edit - added a letter

7. Laura is advocating that we teach our children how to FEAR
I busted out laughing when I read this thread title. Teach your children to remember names and addresses, because eventually, they'll encounter disasters? How nurturing. :eyes:

I am astounded by her negativity! But if I were married to George, I'd wake up EACH and EVERY morning fearing a disaster!

10. That's not a bad idea...
I wore an ID medallion around my neck (and under my clothes) whenever I was away from my parents and not at school (at a birthday party), until I was 7 or so, even though I knew all of the data. It actually helped once, when I was 6 or so, and me and my friend Aviva got stranded at Chuck E. Cheese (after a birthday party -- Mr. Song thought Mrs. Song had us in her car, and vice versa). We were both smart kids, and we figured out very quickly that if one of us was the spokesperson and one of us turned on the water works, we'd get some attention and probably some free game tokens while the adults sorted things out.

So, Aviva started crying, and I showed the medallion and we got a bunch of tokens.

My SO's 3-year-old knows her nickname (her true first name is long and Welsh; she does know it but only when prompted and there's no way she'd spell it) and last name, the name of her daycare/preschool, and she's been known to call her father by his first name on occasion. I think she'd do OK.

I've also heard anyone with talking parrots should teach them a phone number, in case of escape or theft.

...by a 5-yr old walking alone along an interstate. These people have no shame. Considering all the NOLA horror stories involving children, she should stay clear of telling us what we should be doing different.

15. I'm doing my damndest to prepare my 6-year-old for disasters
that he and his entire generation will have to face because our generation phucked everything up BUT GOOD, beginning with what we allowed the Bush Family 'n Friends to get away with on December 12, 2000.

But there are some disasters that you just can't prepare a child for, no matter how hard you try.
:grr:

20. Is it cold in Alexandria? First she teaches them how to read

and now the mother of all mothers teaches the mothers how to teach their kids.

Why doesn't SHE teach the little lost babies how to say their names parents names and their phone numbers?

She could spend all day and all night in the shelters doing just that, NO, she walks around and photo ops.

She is talking to moms who love their children and carried them on their shoulders to keep them out of harms way!

Poor people LOVE there children and spend more time with their children than she ever did - she was and probably still is a drunk and a druggie like her Chimp Twin.

Here kids were with their Nannie while their kids were with their Mommie!

She makes me sick with her pompous ass.

What's with the Queen like wrap?

This bitch is outa touch.

21. Well, Laura, I did just that.....
My children are in their thirties and when the Supreme Court appointed your dimwit of a husband as president I told both of them "prepare for a disaster with this asshole in charge."

And, see, wasn't I right?

BTW, both of my children voted Gore and Kerry, so they are well-prepared to see the hypocrisy of Repugs.

30. How do I prepare them for the disaster that is this administration?
I've tried to explain it to them, but really, how do you prepare your children for this level of ineptitude, callousness, stupidity and greed?
I remind then that there are lots of good people, but I don't even believe any one can protect us so I just tell them that their parents will always protect them the best that we can.
