Pakistan president slammed for rape quote
It was shocking to read that General Musharraf had publicly aired his low opinion of women ...," opposition MP Sherry Rehman said about Musharraf's comments in an interview with the Washington Post this week.

"This is very frivolous way of looking at rape cases in the country," human rights activist Kamila Hyat said.

Musharraf made the comments after being asked about the high-profile case of Mukhtaran Mai, who was gang raped on the orders of a tribal council in 2002 as punishment for her brother's alleged love affair with a woman from another tribe.

"You must understand the environment in Pakistan," Musharraf told the Washington Post. "This has become a moneymaking concern. A lot of people say if you want to go abroad and get a visa for Canada or citizenship and be a millionaire, get yourself raped," he said.

1. I can only hope he has personal experience himself so he can
test his hypothesis. I hope it happens to him. I am sick of people who don't get it.

2. To him it's the only logical reason left.
Why else would a woman try so hard to shame her country unless she'd gotten raped on purpose in the first place so she could make money off bringing shame to her country.

See? Logic. :(

8. He is "ON THE PAYROLL" if ya know what I mean
Funny how we were so eager to depose an evil dictator named Saddam, but at the same time we shovel BILLIONS at a dictator named Pervez Musharaf, in exchange for his "hep" in the war on terra....

But he is playing the monkey for a total fool. He takes the cash, sends his forces out to look for Osama, but darn! They never seem to find him, or they just missed him, or they round up some minor player who hasn't seen the dude in years...and ole Pervez keeps cashing the checks. And in the meantime, the madrasas out in the hinterlands keep teaching the kids about Am-reek-ah, the Evil Empire.

He knows a sucker when he sees one...and he is taking the monkey for a fool, and our tax dollars hand over fist.

13. I wish the media would call him what he is -- Pakistan's Dictator.
'President' seems to give him some sort of undeserved legitimacy.

4. There's very bad karma from a statement like this.
He's enabling rapists to continue doing what they've been doing.

6. it's just another instance of blaming the victim
rather than deal with the real issue of rape and those who commit it.

5. Musharraf has all but said on a number of occasions
that most women in Pakistan who are being raped actually chose to, so this is nothing new.

Pakistan President's comments: cry rape and go to Canada, are condemned

The Pakistan president commented this week that many in his country felt crying rape was an easy way to make money and move to Canada. President Musharraf's remarks have been condemned by Prime Minister Paul Martin, Amnesty International and the woman whose case brought the issue to the world's attention.

Pakistan's leading English-language daily newspaper - Dawn - went after Musharraf in an editorial headlined "Wrong thing to say". "If this attitude, of blaming rape and other crimes against women on women themselves and ridiculing NGOs (non-government organisations) that take up such issues, begins to travel upward from ignorant mullahs and male chauvinists to permeate the higher echelons of the administration, then God help us," it said.

Musharraf is due to speak to an audience of Pakistani-American women in New York on Saturday.

Time for him to stew in his own juices.

15. Reminds me of Clayton Williams
Ran for governor of Texas against Ann Richards. He said "Bad weather is like being raped, it's inevitable so relax and enjoy it." That torpedoed his campaign mighty quick.
