NEW YORK -- Former Vice President Al Gore told a gathering of international leaders Saturday that Hurricane Katrina should serve as a warning that the world shouldn't ignore the consequences of global warming.

"We face a global emergency, a deepening climate crisis that requires us to act," Gore told attendees at the Clinton Global Initiative, a conference on world problems organized by former President Clinton.

He said it is vital for government to protect its citizens from the dangers of climate change, even if the issue hasn't captured the public's attention.
