No Rice at U.N. dinner on women's rights
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Diplomacy's most powerful woman, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, has turned down a dinner date with other female foreign ministers to discuss women's rights, citing a clash with her schedule.

Fifteen of the 17 women foreign ministers at the U.N. General Assembly were to attend Saturday's dinner, hosted by Sweden. A State Department official said Rice would be giving her own reception at the same time.

"It not a political gesture. It was not possible to fit it into her schedule," the U.S. official said.

The other minister who could not attend was Roza Otunbayeva of Kyrgystan, Swedish diplomats said.

Madeleine Albright, who served as Secretary of State under former President Bill Clinton, began the tradition of organizing her women colleagues when she was ambassador to the U.N. and continued it when she became secretary of state.......

11. Once again the Bush Administration spits in the face of everything...
progressive (or even humanitarian) and by so doing not only implicitly sides with both misogynism and tyranny in general but also (once again) reveals that its commitment to "democracy" is an ultimate Big Lie. Yet there are still fools who believe Bush's imposition of Islamic theocracy on Iraq was a "blunder" rather than the cunning expression of deliberate, methodically imposed policy.

Somewhere Josef Goebbels is smiling,

13. Another embarrassment by the BFEE
Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 06:05 PM by MaineDem
You know, maybe we should be bending over backward to make nice with the world. This dinner would be a good step.

These women, including Condi (ugh), are positive role models for girls of the world. Not many women have reached the positions these women have. I'm so disappointed that Condi couldn't take time to join them.

Another shitty way for Bush Co to slap the world in its face.

Let me reword my subject line. It's not an embarrassment FOR the Bushies; it's an embarrassment CAUSED BY them.

I hate articles like this. How hard is it to ask what her appointment is and why it was booked the same time as the UN dinner on Women's Rights. I highly doubt this dinner was planned at the last minute.

27. Hmm, and Ms Rice?
Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 06:42 PM by ismnotwasm
What do you think you would have been doing 40 years ago without the courageous women who fought for YOUR fucking right to be in the position you are in now? Lets see, what we're the majority of black women doing for work 40 years ago? Not busy being the Secretary of state, now were they?
You disgust me, Ms. Rice. You, of all people should know that you stand on the backs of those who came before, some of who DIED so you could be in your very comfortably powerful position.
Conflict in schedule? I don't think so. You are just another of this administration who had no conscience. Most likely some form of sociopathic disease. Do you hate Black women? Or just women in general? Or just human beings?
Just think, as one of the most powerful women in the world, you could address things like the mass rapes and killings of women and little girls in Guatemala. You could address things like female circumcision. Child brides. Sexual slavery. Rape culture. You, in your position could bring these subjects up to the forefront of American conscienceness. You have a chance to inform the entire world that the chronic and accepted abuse of women in so many countries, including this one, in NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE. That we MUST change.
But no. You have a scheduling conflict. More important things to do.
So Ms. Rice, I guess you'll continue to stand on the backs of the dead and dying women lived before you and are living now, in agony. Without hope. I guess I should have expected nothing less from you.

34. She is the antithesis of what a woman of her stature SHOULD be
She fights only for the right-wing agenda regardless of the fact that it grossly detrimental to women, minorities, of which she is both, and also to the poor to whom she looks down upon.

I have a special contempt for her, over and above my general contempt for the whole bush admin, because she has chosen to aid and abet an agenda that harms all that she should champion, imo.

She, of all people, should have the courage to stand up to regimes like her bosses. At least we have other courageous black female politicians, who ARE standing up for us. Sheila Jackson-Lee of Tx, is fantastic, as is Cynthia McKinney. There are others, and they make Condi look like the pathetic shill she is.

48. They Do Everything They Can to Insult the UN
This administration has done more to undermine our position among other nations than anyone could have imagined. They come in with 700 proposed changes for UN policy and then snub the women diplomats. Which is worse--making Powell look like a fool in front of the rest of the world leaders--plopping B*lton into position as Ambassador after he has the nerve to say the UN would be better off w/o 10 of its floors--or sending the rice maiden in to run a counter reception.
