SYDNEY, Australia (UPI) -- The former leader of the Australian Labor Party calls the country`s alliance with the United States 'the last manifestation of the White Australia mentality.'
Mark Latham led the party to defeat last year in parliamentary elections against the Conservative coalition led by Prime Minister John Howard. Latham promised to pull Australian troops out of Iraq if he won, a stand that won Howard the open support of President Bush.
'The Latham Diaries' show Latham went farther in private than he did in public, denouncing Australia`s involvement in Korea and Vietnam as well as Iraq, The Australian reports. Latham also said if the country prefers 'being an American colony ... that`s not a nation worth leading.'
Latham resigned from the party leadership shortly after the election.
