MONTPELIER, Vt. -- Vermont's Republican lieutenant governor has established a committee to consider running for the U.S. Senate against a self-described socialist, filling the void created when the GOP governor opted out of the race.
Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie, 46, announced Friday that he would spend the next three to four weeks weighing whether he can raise enough money for a campaign against Rep. Bernie Sanders.
Sanders is an independent who says he believes in socialism, although he's not a member of the Socialist Party. He has said he expects to spend as much as $5 million on the race, which would easily be the most expensive political campaign in the state's history.
"I need to really take a good hard look to see if I could be competitive with those levels of funding," Dubie said.
