Legislative candidates play the ethics card

In their bid to knock another chunk out of the Republican political foundation in Monmouth County, Democratic candidates for freeholder and Assembly are using a page right out of the GOP playbook: corruption.
The Democrats are trying to make hay out of a well-publicized public corruption investigation in Monmouth County launched by U.S. Attorney Chris Christie, a Republican. Since February, 17 former and current public officials have been arrested, charged or convicted -- 10 Republicans, six Democrats and one with no party affiliation.
The roundup has opened the window for Democratic Assembly candidates Matt Doherty and Jim Reilly to sell themselves as reformers in their bid to capture two Republican seats in the 11th District. The Democratic duo make this clear by calling for tougher ethics laws and stiffer corruption penalties in a series of town hall meetings.
"There's been unprecedented corruption in Monmouth County at every level of government," said Reilly to about 15 people who showed up on Aug. 24. The Democrats are trying to oust Republican incumbent Assemblymen Steven Corodemus and Sean Kean (no relation to the former governor).
