Right-To-Life Movement Celebrates Success
On Capitol Hill, in the Florida statehouse, at the Supreme Court, even in the boardroom of the YWCA, the self-proclaimed right-to-life movement and its conservative allies are on a winning streak that is deeply troubling to abortion-rights activists.

The latest victories came almost simultaneously - final congressional approval of a bill banning a disputed late-term abortion procedure and Florida lawmakers' vote empowering Gov. Jeb Bush to order resumed feeding of a woman who has been in a vegetative state since 1990.

"A monumental day for the sanctity of human life," declared the conservative Family Research Council after Tuesday's votes in Washington and Tallahassee, Fla.

However, Dr. David Grimes, a North Carolina physician who formerly headed the abortion surveillance division of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, called it "a very sad day."

1. Florida legislator attempts to bring Chimpy into the fray:
Delegate Bob Marshall (R-13th, Virginia House of Delegates)

Wednesday, October 22, 2003

President George W. Bush

The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC
FAX: 202-456-2461

RE: Terri Schiavo’s Life Still in Jeopardy

Dear President Bush:

Terri Schiavo who is handicapped continues to experience violations of her Civil Rights which threaten her life and well-being despite passage of a law by the Florida legislature blocking her starvation. (See attached.)

Woodside Hospice where Terri was staying ignored Governor Jeb Bush’s executive order issued at 5:00 PM to begin nutrition and hydration. Finally at 7:00 PM Woodside authorized Terri’s transfer to Morton Plant Hospital.
Morton Plant Hospital medical staff in Clearwater also refused to re-insert her feeding tube or provide an IV, claiming they would be sued by Michael Schavio even though the recently passed Florida statute gave them immunity from suit. Finally they relented at approximately 9:30 PM and inserted an IV.
Florida Judge David A. Demers declined to appoint a temporary guardian for Terri to ensure compliance with Governor Bush’s executive order.

Former Chief of Staff of Morton Plant Hospital, Dr. Jay Carpenter may be reached at his home to verify the first two points above at xxxxxxxxxx, or his cell at xxxxxxxxxx.

Terri’s friends appealed to me last night to intervene for her with Morton Plant hospital. I am not situated to effectively protect Terri’s civil rights. Terri’s situation requires federal involvement. Because Terri’s husband is still her guardian, Terri’s life is still in jeopardy.

Sincerely,

Delegate Bob Marshall

2. Husband
Terri's husband is much more tolerant of this than I would be.

7. Okay
What would you do. I know my wife and she knows me, we have already made our wishes known should it ever come to this type of situation.

Now in order to make sure our wishes are carried out, we will have to go and pay an attorney to put our wishes on paper, or else wonder if the state will interfere.

Which do you think is more merciful, removing her feeding tube, or letting her live for the next 10 or 15 years, by which time her parents will probably be dead themselves, and her siblings will be
too old to care for her.

And at what point does the state take over financial responsibility for the decision that they made. If it's Florida don't count on it, hell they still don't know what happened to that little girl that the state put inot foster care.

How about a little outrage here, or doesn't she count too?

9. starving her to death is not the answer

maybe euthanasia is appropriate but just pulling the feeding
tube seems rather barbaric to me.

But I guess I'm just some weirdo that cares about human suffering.

11. She can't feel anything because she's in a permanent vegetative
state.

13. As an attorney, it pains me to say this
but you do NOT need to pay an attorney to prepare a living will. Living will forms are sold at most stationary stores. Hell, you can just take a piece of paper, write down what you want and sign it in front of a notary (that's not strictly required but I strongly recommend it) and you will have a good legal document which will allow your wishes to be carried out.

Of course, if you WANT to pay me, I'll be happy to prepare the papers for you.

4. Yep. I don't know how he has remained sane.
Her parents and the right-to-life movement have completely demonized him.

5. oh janx
Disassociate this from the stupid right to life movement, please.

It's associated with the right to live movement.

It's a disability issue.

6. Nobody can disassociate it from the RTL movement.
Because proponents of the RTL movement are firmly entrenched in this thing. Terri's parents enlisted them, for pete's sake! They are the ones who are responsible for bringing state and now attempts at federal government into this.

Jebby is at at-the-ready, giving orders. Chimpy has been alerted. The whole royal, power-mongering family is ready to take control of women's bodies.

This is very serious stuff, and I can't believe more people don't see what is happening here.

10. Terri Schiavo is "goo??"
OK, maybe you didn't mean that. However, you're responding to a thread having to do with Ms. Schiavo and late term abortions. In neither case is what is being discussed "goo." Late term abortions involve the killing of viable or nearly viable fetuses, not "goo" by any stretch of the imagination.

For the record, I am pro-choice and I would not have supported the ban without a specifically spelled out "health of the mother" exception. If there were such an exception, I probably would have supported the ban.

12. Goo?

Come on. For the sake of clarity, it is not goo. At conception a zygote is formed, not goo.
