Katrina raises voters' doubts about Bush (AP poll ~60% disapproval for *)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Hurricane Katrina and the bungled government response have weakened President Bush, raising questions among Americans about his Iraq and flood-recovery plans and spreading fears among fellow Republicans about next year's elections.

An AP-Ipsos poll says nearly six in 10 people disapprove of Bush's job performance, unchanged from the record-low rating he had before last week's televised address from the heart of New Orleans.

That underscores why GOP leaders fear Bush could be a drag on GOP candidates in 2006.

Many in the poll also were concerned that Katrina and its aftermath would lead to a national economic downturn. Less than half approve of Bush's handling of Katrina. Less than a third give him good marks on gas prices.

Given a choice in the survey, 42 percent favored cutting spending on Iraq to pay for relief efforts on the Gulf Coast, and 29 percent wanted to delay or cancel Republican tax cuts. That's a whopping 71 percent backing options that Bush doesn't even have on the table.

What's really remarkable is that Katrina sliced into the ONLY thing he had going for him. Many saw him as a decisive leader. That's shot to hell.

Now, his speeches and publicity events look hollow and staged.

The man has no credibility when it comes to being a leader and being a man who could help the country in a crisis.

What can Junior do now? Prior to Katrina, most of the nation didn't like his handling of the economy, environmental issues--and they flat out spit in his face on Social Security.

Where can he go?

Rove must be scrambling like a mad man.

This should be very interesting. The vaunted party discipline of the Republicans splintering apart like a cheap dining room chair. I can't wait to see incumbent Republicans who have been so far up Bush's ass for the last five years suddenly disavowing him and his policies.
"What? Me? No, I wasn't in favor of that. You must have me confused with some other ass kissing Republican".

14. Woman I work with

is from New Orleans and stil has family there (they escaped Katrina). She is NOT blaming Bush at all. She voted for him, but is still saying that although he has made "some mistakes", he is still the "best President we have ever had." I just sit there and stare at her in disbelief. She says most of the blame should be placed on local officials and the "ungodly" state of New Orleans. It was God's punishment for the sin of New Orleans. Bush is a "good Christian Man", to quote this woman. I have come to the conclusion that you simply cannot reason with people like her.

They say that love is blind, but I am beginning to understand now that FAITH may be blind also.
