Wisconsin Governor, Seven Others Demand Oil Companies Refund Drivers
------------------------
Sep. 21--MADISON -- Gov. Jim Doyle demanded Tuesday that oil companies refund Wisconsin drivers $88 million, saying the firms gouged consumers in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Doyle and seven other Democratic governors sent President Bush and congressional leaders a letter asking them to order oil companies to return "excessive, ill-gotten profits" to consumers, and to conduct a nationwide investigation of gas prices.

"To price-gouge consumers under normal circumstances, that's dishonest enough," Doyle said. "But to make money off the misery of others is downright immoral."

Doyle cited a recent study by University of Wisconsin-Madison economist Don Nichols that concluded the recent gas spike was not primarily caused by the hurricane because prices at the pump have risen much faster than the price of crude oil.

Doyle said that Wisconsin drivers have been overcharged $88 million for gas this month.

1. Go Doyle!
Only one problem..will the state get the money? I don't see how it can be refunded to individuals.

3. Maybe not free gas, but "discounted" gas for a while.
We had an station owner in our county that was price fixing, and the judgement handed down was discounted gas for the consumers.

7. Before Katrina even existed
There were stories that gas was going to be at least $3 a gallon by Labor Day. Katrina was just the excuse the oil companies needed to gouge the consumer.

8. [8 Dem] Governors Seek Gas Price Gouging Probe
MADISON, Wis. - Eight Democratic governors asked
President Bush and congressional leaders on Tuesday to investigate possible gasoline price gouging in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

In a letter, the governors urged an investigation into "excessive profits being made by oil companies who are taking advantage of this national crisis."

The letter was signed by the governors of Oregon, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, New Mexico, Iowa, Montana and Washington. It also urged Congress to refund any excessive profits to consumers.

The letter cited a study by University of Wisconsin economist Don Nichols that found the hurricane was not entirely to blame for high gas prices.

9. Only after Katrina? Give us a break? What about the gouging when
Cheney is mad at the country or the world or when he meets with the oil-energy companies and they plot. And what about before and during every single holiday in this country and all of summer?

12. good for them!
If that $88million is for one state, I shudder to think of the total take nationwide...isn't there a law against that? Oh, right, the bushits reversed all our laws :grr:
