Every Albertan to get $400, Klein says

Canadian Press

Lethbridge, Alta. -- Every man, woman and child in Alberta will get $400 from the province's unbudgeted surplus, the Alberta government announced Tuesday.

Premier Ralph Klein said the money, the result of burgeoning oil and gas wealth, will hopefully be distributed to the heads of households by the end of the year.

Mr. Klein said the surplus cash will also flow into two other priority areas -- infrastructure projects and various endowments.

... Not everyone was thrilled with the announcement, which emerged from a caucus meeting in Lethbridge.

"These cheques will mean some people can pay their heating bills but for other people it might mean a ski trip or a fancy dinner," said Liberal Leader Kevin Taft.

3. Right Provience
Wrong politician.

Canmore Leader

“Right now there are strong opinions that, to use an old Ralph Klein quote, we should let those Eastern bastards freeze in the dark,” he said.

5. Didn't that quote pre-date Klein, the drunken (car salesman?)
Apologies, I forget what he did before he became premier of Alberta.

I'm pretty sure that this dates way back to Lougheed.

6. It Occurred

Prior to 1975.

Ralph was a reporter, then mayor of Calgary, before changing from a Liberal to a PC and entering the government of premier Getty.

A Lougheed PC would be nowhere near a present so called Alberta PC.

So in a the true sense King Ralph is a neocon.

11. The Quote
Came during the Lougheed term but it came from Ralpie, who was not connected to the provincial government at the time.

9. Yes, it does
During their first boom...that they also blew.

Famous bumpersticker during the bust years. 'please God give us one more boom, and we promise not to piss this one away'

Fat chance.

4. I thought each province has the right to their resources.
When did the federal govt ever have jurisdiction?

Just wondering.

7. This is like Colorado. Eventually, people prefer that the govt...
keep the money and put it into something useful, like the schools.

I did polling on this kind of thing in Colorado.

8. Actually they'd prefer
schools, hospitals, roads, bridges and no homeless.

$400 won't even buy back to school clothes, much less Xmas stuff.
