Whoops! IRS payments in (the bottom of S.F.) bay
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/12692632.htm

The IRS has some bad news for some 30,000 taxpayers in 13 states.

These unlucky check writers didn't forget to pay their taxes, and they didn't make a mistake on their returns. But they might want to start looking for their checkbooks -- because the payments they made on their estimated taxes due last week are now most likely at the bottom of the San Francisco Bay.

The checks were lost early on the morning of Sept. 11, when the truck that was transporting them to an IRS lockbox got in an accident on the San Mateo Bridge, and 30,000 pieces of mail were blown all around, including into the bay.

``We believe these are almost all estimated tax payments that were due on Sept. 15,'' said Terry Lemons, an IRS spokesman in Washington.

Lemons said the agency will happily waive penalties and interest for anyone whose payment was lost, and it is asking people who sent mail to the PO Box 510000 in San Francisco during the first 10 days of the September to sit tight and see if their checks clear.

1. I've always wondered what happens in that kind of situation...
I know there have been Fedex plane crashes...what happens if a whole segment of mail gets lost. Fedex has records of the sender, but what would the USMail do?

5. New Orleans mail was re-routed
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 11:51 PM by yankeeinlouisiana
to Baton Rouge. I'm not sure what happened with other areas. The Post Office suggested people had their mail forwarded to where they are staying. Even if it's the Astro Dome in Houston.

8. if you applied for a passport here's what I know
http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html
The New Orleans Passport Agency is CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE due to impact of Hurricane Katrina.

In order to assist customers whose applications are being processed by the New Orleans Passport Agency:

If you applied BEFORE August, 25, 2005 at an Acceptance Facility in the New Orleans Passport Agency Region (Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia (except DC suburbs including the Cities of Alexandria and Falls Church and the Counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudon, Prince William, and Stafford), Wisconsin and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico), OR

If you applied BEFORE August, 25, 2005 at an Acceptance Facility in Southern California (all Counties South of and including San Luis Obispo, Kern, and San Bernardino), Clark County, Nevada, New York City, and Long Island, AND</snip>

As far as the mail goes what I do know my post office had a sign up saying that they weren't taking mail for delivery to the 3 states LA. MISS. AL. that was on the 25th of Aug.

Lucky me my passport application got re-routed at the last minute so it wasn't lost in Katrina.

9. I think these guys should be completely let off the hook.
Hell, if the President and Vice President can rob our
US treasury in broad daylight, certainly the gov't should be responsible for transporting funds safely.
