NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- The number of deaths in Louisiana blamed on Hurricane Katrina has risen to 801, the state's emergency response medical director said Wednesday, bringing the overall death toll from the storm to 1,035.

Mississippi reports 219 people killed in the storm, Florida's toll is 11 dead and Alabama and Georgia each report 2 killed.

FEMA, La. outsource Katrina body count to firm implicated in body-dumping
scandals

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has hired Kenyon International to set up
a mobile morgue for handling bodies in Baton Rouge, Louisiana following
Hurricane Katrina, RAW STORY has learned.

Kenyon is a subsidiary of Service Corporation International (SCI), a
scandal-ridden Texas-based company operated by a friend of the Bush family.
Recently, SCI subsidiaries have been implicated in illegally discarding and
desecrating corpses.

Louisiana governor Katherine Blanco subsequently inked a contract with the firm
after talks between FEMA and the firm broke down.

In other words, FEMA and then Blanco outsourced the body count from Hurricane
Katrina -- which many believe the worst natural disaster in U.S. history -- to
a firm whose parent company is known for its "experience" at hiding and dumping
bodies.

11. Katrina's Death Toll Climbs Past 1,000

NEW ORLEANS - Searchers smashed through doors in New Orleans on Wednesday, bringing their hunt for the dead to homes that had been locked and to blocks hardest hit by Katrina's flooding. Behind those doors, officials said they expected a sharply escalating body count even as the overall death toll passed 1,000.

"There still could be quite a few, especially in the deepest flooded areas," said U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Jeffrey Pettitt, who is overseeing the retrieval of bodies. "Some of the houses, they haven't been in yet." Officials said searchers are beginning to find more children.

Reporters and photographers roaming the city have recorded numerous bodies in recent days around the city. One that had been marked remained in a house and visible from the street for a week before a reporter notified authorities. It was removed that day.

Nagin last week acknowledged there had been problems with the body removal, at least in the early stages, partly because Kenyon workers were having trouble with the conditions.
