Democrats send man in President Bush mask to Bloomberg campaign event in Times Square

Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK -- Democrats sent a man wearing a President Bush mask to a campaign appearance for Republican Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Wednesday to remind him he can't "run away from Bush," the party's state chairman said.

"Mike, you know you love me," read the man's sign, as he stood across the street from Bloomberg's news conference in Times Square.

The mayor was announcing an endorsement from theater and film unions and did not acknowledge the man, who the state Democratic Committee said was a volunteer.

The Democrats' political theater was a response to Bloomberg's recent departures from Bush policies. They allege he is inching away from the right to woo voters in this left-leaning town, where 2.6 million Democrats outnumber Republicans by a 5-1 ratio.

2. That's one reason why I am open shop.
I don't want to belong to a union that works against my interests and beliefs.

5. Really! Why would a union
endorse a bush toadie, anyway?

3. Yes, that IS a good move.
Street theater, good visuals, with a RELATIVELY innocent and "playful," even humorous visual statement.

Remember when a guy in a chicken suit went out to hound - I think - bush-1 for being too chicken to debate. Don't remember the exact details, but - hey look what a strong image it left in my mind. Good marketing. You remember the image and the overriding message behind it even if you don't remember the specifics.

Evil, and I think, pretty effective. Promotes "water cooler talk" the way we were encouraged to do in morning radio - say something or do something that people really remembered, either because it was so outrageous or so funny or so in-yer-face, that they'd wind up talking about it around the water cooler at work: "did you hear what that guy said on the radio this morning?" followed by titter-titter-titter - but you 1) remembered it and 2) were very likely provoked to tune in again the next morning to see what else they might say or do.

Glad to see they're using their noggins!

8. He had Cindy Sheehan busted last week . .
. . for having a peaceful anti-war protest. His cops broke up the protest - and I hear she was roughed up.

Fuck Bloomberg.

6. YES!! This is what the dems must do. Rovian dirty tricks with a
sense of humor. This is disarming, less threatening, and makes the greater point all at the same time.

Its a win win and does not engender the fear and bad feelings that the original Rovian methodologies do.

14. Political Prankster Dick Tuck
Morning Edition, October 22, 2004

Democratic political operative Dick Tuck made a point of bedeviling former President Richard Nixon. Tuck is now retired and living in Tucson, Ariz. But he's full of memories and more than willing to recount some of his pranks and practical jokes. Rene Gutel of member station KJZZ reports.
