CBS: Bush Job Approval Edges Back Up
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/10/22/opinion/polls/main579524.shtml

President George W. Bush's overall job approval rating has risen slightly in the past few weeks, and as he travels through Asia discussing terrorism with leaders in the region, confidence in his ability to handle international crises has also risen.

Six in ten approve of the way he is handling terrorism, but approval for his handling of other issues like foreign policy, Iraq, and the economy, remains below fifty percent.

More than half of Americans are confident in Bush's handling of an international crisis, up from a low of 45 percent in late September. Still, this evaluation does not approach the highs Bush has received on this question in the past.

<snip>

George W. Bush's overall job approval rating has risen a few points in this latest poll, and is now at 54 percent. Three weeks ago, 51 percent approved of the job he was doing.

Bush has shown particular improvement among people aged 18 to 29 and Independents; in these two groups, Bush's approval rating has risen ten percentage points since late September.

I suspect it's stabilizing to some degree. This is a three point uptick after their little PR blitz. The overall trend is still down.

5. The "filter" will bite him.
Now that Bush took a poke at his greatest (and most fickle) ally, the national mainstream media, he is going to have a hard time for a bit. I hope the reporters out there who have been biting their tongues to stay innocuous will take some fact-shots at the Bush Cartel. His goose is cooked.

12. Not quite free fall, it is starting to taper off
Look back at the Jan 2005 numbers, those are his "equilibrium" stats. Barring another war or some other outrage, his approval polling should stabilize there with a bit of "line noise". He won't drop much more than that, as there are about 40% of the registered voting population who would vote for him if he fucked a pig during the SOTU speach.

Imagine the spin:
"See? He's committed to humane treatment of animals!"
"What a handsome man he is."
"It takes God-given talent to please a pig that way."

So don't get your hopes up.

13. I'm seeing wider variation in the polls, now...
however, if you look at the ARG marks it looks like gravity's getting hold of him. I chalk it up to Bush's media manipulation- partly the media breaking free of him.

7. Why this will continue to be such bad news
It is the perfect set-up to the electronic vote-rigging sham coming up in 04. As long as polls indicate a statistical dead heat in some generic overall rating despite very serious negatives in virtually every specific concern facing voters, well...as long as this mysterious overall number hovers at 50%, it will be very difficult to generate outrage for the stolen election. Dems will just be accused of being sore losers.

We need a real trouncing to make it "stick."

9. I feel like a big opportunity is being missed
It seems like every day I hear about a staunch Republican or group of conservatives are having serious misgivings about Bush. Although a good deal of that is posted here, still more I hear abroad. This has lead me to the conclusion that Bush is very beatable (BBV not withstanding).

I also think that the current approach of many Democrats is wrong. We learned from the Clinton impeachment that lots of negative advertising doesn't have the intended effect, and that was further borne out with the negative stories about Arnold.

I understand that Democrats are angry about the political situation - I'm one of them! But the public doesn't want to hear that, or at least not just that. The messages should possibly start by saying what Democrats disagree with, but follow it up with a positive statement of what a Democrat would do instead. Here's an example:

Bush is out to help corporations. His disastrous policies show clearly that those who donated to his campaign, most notably the electric companies, are favored in the policies written by the administration. Either that or the corporations write the policy.

I would put forth a policy to help the people, not the corps. In the aforementioned case, I would restore the checks that were in place previously, which were put there to keep electric companies from holding their customers hostage. We saw this happen in California not too long ago.

There are lots of possible examples.

Looking at the numbers, the Democrats are hurting bad compared to a month ago, BUT...

The columns, proportional to the numbers in the other poll topics, are disproportional on these two questions!!!!

Just take a look.

I stepped on the scale this morning. I was down a pound. I stepped on it tonight. I was up a pound. That's how stupid these polls are. This is why I can barely watch the news anymore.

15. Is it just me or does it seem like there is a poll done about every 60
seconds on this loser. Well you didn't like him yesterday but we thought you might change your mind so we thought we would call back today and see how you feel. I mean really. Every time this goof ball's poll numbers slip someone pulls an Acme screen door and pollster report out and twist the numbers until they can get some kind of positive report. My feeling is his numbers are sinking. There is no earthly reason for his numbers to be rising in any significant way.

16. Dems blew it again by giving Bush his $87b
That - and not the mild-mannered hemming and hawing - is what the public notices.

Message to Dem HQ: if you give Bush a pass on 9/11; if you stand up and cheer at his speeches in Congress; if you give him his Patriot Act; if you vote for his tax cut; if every chance you get you praise his "war on terrorism"; if you keep funding Iraq...

...people will see you for what you are. Bush-lite.

Byrd and Kennedy are doing the right thing. Congress'l Dems, take note. Start acting like an opposition!

27. You have insecurity issues
Loyal:

I see you over and over again, berating any person or group who doesn't agree with you completely. Whether it's someone who doesn't hate the Green Party with the proper degree of scorn, or someone who thinks the Palestinians have a point, or someone who thinks gun control is a good idea, you're there spewing venom. Or puke, as the case may be. You seem to be very stuck on the command "shut up", too. I've seen you use it a good deal when someone says something that makes you feel uncomfortable.

In short, I haven't seen you embody too many Democratic ideals. I have no doubt that you're a Democrat, but you're very rigid; you have issues. Would you mind moderating your tone when you post, please? Have whatever opinion you want, and argue it vociferously if the spirit moves you, but have some tact and some class, please. I can see that you're not a very happy person, but you're spreading your misery to other people and that's not considerate.

Thanks for reading this constructive criticism and being mature about it.

17. Numbers go up when...
out of the country?

Just a little amusing, no?

51% to 54% seems like its within the margin of error from the former poll.

Nothing to be concerned over methinks.

24. I was a bit disappointed when I saw this
but when I look at the Pollkatz graph, I see the range and realize this fits in with the overal trend. His most recent polls have him from 54 to 47 percent, making his average about 51 percent. Two polls this week have him below 50 percent. This poll also has a 4 percent margin of error, which is kind of high.

30. Bush's so-called rise is within the margin of error
the statement at the bottom of the article says the Margin of error was +/- 4 points, from a sample of only 751 people.

So, considering Bush's so-called rise in approval is only 3 points, from 51 to 54, it's rather misleading to run a story with the headline that Bush's approval rating "edges back up."

I'm surprised in CBS. They usually do better journalism than that.
