NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Remember when gas spiked to $3-plus a gallon after Hurricane Katrina? By this time next week, that could seem like the good old days.

Weather and energy experts say that as bad as Hurricane Katrina hit the nation's supply of gasoline, Hurricane Rita could be worse.

Katrina damage was focused on offshore oil platforms and ports. Now the greater risk is to oil-refinery capacity, especially if Rita slams into Houston, Galveston and Port Arthur, Texas.

"We could be looking at gasoline lines and $4 gas, maybe even $5 gas, if this thing does the worst it could do," said energy analyst Peter Beutel of Cameron Hanover. "This storm is in the wrong place. And it's absolutely at the wrong time," said Beutel.

I filled up tonight, prompted by a post that gas in Ontario, Canada had gone from $1/liter to $1.98/liter.

After saying the obligatory "thanks george" curse and heading inside to pay, I jokingly said to the guy at the counter, "So, how much is gas going to be in the morning?" Another clerk said, "why, is it supposed to go up?" I told them about the Ontario post and the first one said, "that's funny; we get all our gas from Canada, so nothing happening in the gulf will affect us."

We know about the "bigger picture"/futures-speculation/supply&demand thing, but it's infuriating how three stations within a few hundred feet of each other -- one selling 100% Canadian gas (Qwik Trip), one selling (I assume) Venezuelan gas (Citgo) and the other selling gas from who knows where (Mobil) -- are all selling it at $2.67/gal (outside of Madison, WI), and that we know the prices will move up in lockstep, regardless of source, cost-of-goods, overhead or any other "real" factor that most other businesses have to deal with.

Oh, well...just had to vent.

Added to that, I still have my old '93 5-speed manual VW...it is paid off, what more can I say? It gets 28 MPG city. The thing just won't quit, and I will not get a new car until it does (and to that end, the old thing only has 56,000 miles on it).

I fill my tank every month or thereabouts. I accidentally mentioned that once, and I will say that it really ticked off my co-workers. Most of them drive in from the far suburbs (30+ miles) in SUVs. They are dying under these prices. I can only imagine what $5 will do. For the record, I am not an "I told you so," sort of person. So I just stay quiet and am grateful for the fact that my budget can handle gas (for now).

I agree with those that are trying to fight the gouging by the oil companies. According to a recent study, oil prices would have had to hit 90 dollars a barrel to actually equal 3 dollars a gallon.
