Democrats revive filibuster threat
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/9428796/

WASHINGTON - President Bush’s nominee to the Supreme Court to replace Sandra Day O’Connor appeared to be skating on thin ice Wednesday, even though the president hasn’t yet revealed who the nominee is.

In the war of nerves leading up to Bush's announcement of his next high court nominee, Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid and other Democrats were signaling Wednesday that the filibuster — extended debate in order to kill a nomination — is an option they might use.

Referring to chief justice nominee John Roberts, who looks certain to win Judiciary Committee approval on Thursday and confirmation by the full Senate next week, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn. said, “I don’t think anybody would call him an extremist, or a divisive or confrontational nominee. But if the next nominee is, I think there’d be a real possibility of a filibuster.”

4. Bullshit.........
they'll roll over just like they did with Roberts. Roberts NEVER passed the smell test yet they're talking about filibustering some as yet unknown nominee? :eyes: Nice try guys, you've lost all credibility with me. Any Democrat that votes for Roberts should be defeated in any primary they run in. They're fucking worthless. :grr:

6. They always say "We're saving it for another fight"
But WHEN IS THAT FIGHT GONNA COME?

Every time, same story. I'll believe it when I see it.

10. His non answers to the questions were "Very snappy"
The democrats were impressed with his intellectual dodging!

Yeah, even though Bush blew his wad of 'political capital' on "Schaivo" and the ball is definitely in the democrats court, they rolled over with a whimper again. If Howard dean weren't where he is I would not be in the party any longer.

8. With Bush's low approval..
Edited on Wed Sep-21-05 08:24 PM by Tiggeroshii
The dems have a significant amount of political capital. If they fillibuster Roberts, they would be using that political capital in my eyes. I think they need to wait until they have a clearly fundamentalist idealogue here who's scary enough to spend all the poltiical capital there is. I think that O Connor's replacement will be that one worth risking everything to stop. Not Roberts. He's bad, but not as bad as it'll get.

13. Bushie's strategy on this is totally self-serving

Put a Reagan/Bush consigliere on the court to cover for their crimes, under the cover that he's not a complete whacko wingnut. This is the guy who will lead the cover-up from the inside, what does Bush care if an idiot like Owens is fillibustered? It just gives them more crediblity with the terminally gullible.

THIS is why the Bushies push so hard on "social conservatism", to give them cover for their REAL agenda.

Roberts IS the worst-case scenario.
