WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hurricane Rita could threaten up to 18 Texas oil refineries that have a combined capacity of 4 million barrels per day or 23 percent of the nation's total refining capacity, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday.

"While not all of this capacity would be affected under any scenario, it does point out how much refining capacity is at risk," the EIA said in a weekly oil market report.

Texas has 26 refineries, with 18 located near the Gulf of Mexico coastline, it said.

2. Texas City is Nothing but Refineries

Heck we're talking oil patch here. And it's headed for the heart of it.

4. I should be more familiar with the geography of Texas. I am very

well aware of the importance of Texas City, but didn't really realize it's location in relationship to the path of the hurricane. Sheesh, for that matter, I don't know where Chocolate Bayou is either.

5. That's ok, I only know 'cause I used to live there

right under the smoke plume coming from Texas City.

The other thing right in the path is the Johnson Space Center on the shores of Clear Lake. They're already evacuating and transferring control of the space station to Russia for the duration.

7. Chocolate Bayou is in Alvin, TX

Alvin is twelve miles southeast of Houston in northeast Brazoria County.
I think it's in Zone B for evacuation purposes... in other words, mandatory.

3. I just saw on the Weather Channel that a Cat 5 hitting Galveston Bay...

...would have a 38 foot storm surge. They did a computer model.

That's enough to wipe out just about everything in it's path.
