NJ senators will vote against Roberts' confirmation as chief justice

WASHINGTON - New Jersey's two Democratic senators said Wednesday they will oppose Judge John Roberts' nomination to become chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

"While he has demonstrated intelligence and eloquence, he has not provided adequate insight into his views or judicial philosophy," Corzine said. "The Supreme Court is too important and the stakes are too high to roll the dice on a judge who may sit on the bench for decades to come."

Lautenberg said although Roberts is intelligent and likable, "he wasn't straightforward in answering questions about his commitment to civil rights and the right to privacy."

"Serious questions were raised about Judge Roberts' philosophy because of memos he wrote as a lawyer in the Reagan administration in which he mocked women's rights, opposed strengthening the Voting Rights Act and referred to the government agency that polices employment discrimination as `un-American,'" Lautenberg said. <snip>

4. John Roberts is a Lawyer not a Judge, and not a very good one IMO

A good Lawyer like a good Debater can argue any side of an issue at any time. Yes Mr. Roberts is intelligent, a quick wit, but he only knows issues from one persecutive. That is why he was coached not to give answers on wedge issues, civil rights and others.

John Roberts was nominated for one reason, to carry on with a ultra right wing agenda in the Supreme Court.

NJ looks true blue to me. Off, By and For the People. That;s exactly what representative government is all about. I have e-mailed both Corzine and Lautenberg and have urged them to vote against confirming Roberts. I am glad I was not the only one.

8. Good to hear

Even if Roberts is a shoe-in for confirmation, it is good to see some Democrats showing some backbone on this nomination. I'm still disappointed in Leahy...

I still haven't figured out what "mainstream America" (or at least our mainstream media) seems to find so appealing about this guy. His dodging of questions is as questionable as the ultra-secretive administration that wants him to be appointed so badly, and some of the views he expressed in his past are pretty scary. And yeah, he just kind of gives me the creeps in general, with those cold blue eyes that look like they're about to pop out of his head and whatnot.

9. NJ has a high literacy and educational rate.

The GOP favors lower standards (the SAT's have been re done in the last 10 yrs. to reflect lower stds.), while proposing higher standards. The best thing Jersey does, is to educate their students, to figure out the BS.

That is the GOP educational std., keep them uninformed, so they will be snowed by the truth. I guess the reasoning by the sheeple is, If God wanted you to be smart, "You'd be Einstein!'.

The problem is, those of us who live in the NE/W have no concept of the Southern strategy (complete, abysmal failure of the educational system). These children are still slaves, we just don't know it!
