Republicans confront Bush on Katrina cost

President George W. Bush was on Wednesday facing growing unrest within the Republican party over the cost of rebuilding the Gulf coast after Hurricane Katrina, as fiscal conservatives in Congress identified $500bn in spending cuts to offset the burden.

The complaints by rank-and-file Republicans reflect unease at the president's pledge to spend “whatever it takes” without setting out clearly how the reconstruction estimated to cost up to $200bn will be funded.

“If we Republicans who are now in charge of both houses of Congress and the presidency are unable to make tough decisions and provide leadership, then we're going to be telling the American people we're no different ,” said Dana Rohrabacher, a California congressman.

But Mike Pence, leader of the group of more than 110 conservatives in the House, said: “The American people may have a different view of the priorities the Congress should have in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.”

he's trying to SAVE all of their JOBS, don't they get it? He can OFFER anything and Promise anything but THEY KNOW he'll never deliver it..

it's a CAMPAIGN PLOY, good cop/bad cop routine..

They know that he has no coat tails so he's offering them a way out without removing tax breaks and never paying for anything..

Remember the rule - republicans get in by claiming that the Democrats TAX everything (Democrats having to do it to pay for the last administration of Repigs), and then when the Repigs get in they jack up the deficit and never pay for anything with REAL money, WHILE they loot the treasury and fleece the american public..

and so the cycle continues every 4 to 8 years, and it's become such an institution that even an idiot is allowed to steal us blind..

I'd love to see a Guillotine set up in the parking lot of the capitol and then have them all line up as Citizens ask them each personally in front of the blade, "HOW do YOU Vote?"

Of course that's just a fantasy as my guillotine is all rusty and is so dull that it won't even slice a Saudi terrorist anymore, just leaves a big bruise and there's a lot of yelling I don't understand - but a man can dream, eh? :)
