Carter says Gore won 2000 election
Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter delivered a shocker at an American University panel in Washington Monday: RAW STORY has learned he told the crowd he was certain Al Gore won the 2000 presidential election.

There is "no doubt in my mind that Gore won the election," the erstwhile President declared, saying the 2000 election process "failed abysmally."

He also snubbed the Supreme Court for getting involved, saying it was "highly partisan."

50. Yep
FEMA has become an insignificant part of an already mismanaged Department of Homeland Security.

Many people, even some Repukes, have respect for Carter. So, let's get the word out! If I was Gore, I wouldn't have formally conceded at all. Just said that there was nothing more he could do.

President Carter was and is a difficult, prickly man, but he never told an untruth that I am aware of. He often bit his tongue far more than was good for his career, maybe even for the country, but to come out publicly with this statement goes beyond courage and public duty. We have another spokesman!

It may make a few partisans happy, but the time for Carter to have spoken has long since past.

13. The Destruction Of The Carter Presidency Was The Precursor
for the model the right wing noise machine has used to attempt the destruction of the Clinton Presidency, and partially succeed, and the destruction of the candidacies of Al Gore and John Kerry.

It was just that when it happened with Carter, we hadn't seen the template used effectively before and blamed it on Carter's ineptness.

Now we know better and so does Jimmy...

70. For a little light reading on the Titanic
try Gary Sick's book, "October Surprise: America's Hostages in Iran and the Election of Ronald Reagan."

St. Reagan should have been impeached and his GOP gang imprisoned. But, of course, Bush Sr. pardoned the few who ever faced time and many are now back in power and running junior's affairs.

Gary Sick was an intelligence analyst and double-sourced all his facts... unfortunately, he does not name all the names. One striking item from the book is that Carter was going to clean up covert operations and in fall, 1977 the "Halloween Massacre" reduced the number of operatives from 1200 to 400. The CIA was really pissed, and many went to work on Reagan's election team. Sick says many had Reagan/Bush bumberstickers displayed with Reagan's name cut off.

You know, if this corruption goes on for a few more decades it could harm the country...

only repugs are low class enough to capitalize on a foreign powers medalling in our democracy. And only Bush is low class enough to steal an election _and_ have the least amount of humility of any president in the history of the United States. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if the repugs just did away with elections altogether and just renamed the presidency to the Empororship.

14. Since leaving office...
President Carter has proven himself in many ways. He has worked for the public good, and has supported and performed many humanitarian efforts. One of his qualities, which occassionally gave him trouble with a news media that was moving ever closer to substituting words of substance with sound-bites and USA Today quips that would interpret his plain-spoken words into something meant to be embarrassing.

I've always considered this plain-spoken quality a good thing of his, and today I'm even prouder that he's stated what we've all been thinking about that fateful election.

31. His FEMA quote is interesting-
Looks like Bush hit the trifecta on FEMA, too. The reverse Midas touch in action. Reading this quote, one can clearly see the Bush touch in action:

When I founded FEMA "we put it together with three specific commitments," Carter remarked. "One, that it would be led highly trained professionals in dealing with disasters. Secondly, that it would be completely independent and not under another agency that would submerge it. And third, that it would be adequately funded."

91. Agrees with SLOR
And it may be a long time before a truly democratically elected President gains office again. The capitulation of the Democrats on and after December 12 2000 indicates various degrees of complicity, complacent personal entrenchment, and outright fear. It was a mistake of immense consequences for Gore to cooperate "for the sake of orderly transition" -- but more so was Clinton's "cooperation" in allowing things like the the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which furthered the concentration of major media in the hands of the oligarchic few. Now look at the fine mess we're in, Ollie!

(Don't even get me started on Black Box Voting in Georgia in 2002 and in the Presidential election of 2004, just one of many corruptions of the electoral process, but a fatal one I think.)

Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor. It must be demanded by the oppressed.

100. Most Democrats didn't KNOW what was happening in this country.
What you have to understand is both Clinton and Gore still believed the political system worked. What they didn't know at the time was there was a rising movement of fascism in the Republican Party, a branch of the party which had as its goal a one-party country, and after their attempt at a coup (impeaching Clinton for nothing) failed, they succeeded in installing their puppet my any means possible, even illegitimate.

The elected Democrats' ONLY error during that time was not understanding what was going on. They thought election 2000 was an aberration, and so did most of the public.

But people who DID know what was going on sat on their butts and did nothing to prevent Bush from taking office. That's because we take our system for granted. People in other democratic countries would NEVER have stood for having a court install a popular vote-losing president.

107. "Clinton and Gore still believed ...
... the political system worked". Now I don't believe that. Not by 1998 anyway, not after the call for impeachment. (Was Hillary hallucinating when complaining about the vast rightwing conspiracy? They knew.) By that time the fascist assault IMO was full blown obvious to anyone with an IQ above 100. Now, if you were to say no one quite knew what to do about it, that's another matter. Wiemar Republic 1933-1934 if you ask me...

114. I believe that Al Gore
had ultimate faith in the American People to discern the truth, in spite of the vast right wing conspiracy that Hillary spoke of. The corpwhorate owned MSM made this next to impossible up until at least the 2000 elections. I also believe the real reason for the corpwhorate owned MSM's cheer leading of the witch hunt against Clinton was a back door attempt at keeping Al from coming to power.

119. I saw the Gores on a TV interview about 2 years ago
and they mentioned that there were mobs screaming death-threats surrounding the vice-president's home in DC 24/7 during the months after the 2000 elections. They had to move their kids to other rooms both for quiet and safety. What good can you say about a crowd screaming for the death of a family? Remember the pictures of the gang terrifying the old vote counters in Florida? If you had the same kind of thugs in your front yard, it'd be pretty hard to hang tough, and even harder if you didn't believe you had the support of the majority. I think if the MSM had reported about that, maybe things would be a whole lot different. But we didn't hear that, so we have a dictator in the White House and our nation is going to hell in a hand basket.

35. MSM vs BBV ...... this shows that MSM is the bigger issue
In order to get the country on board with the need for election reforms - to get the citizenry out in the streets with torches and pitchforks - we need stories like this to be told by the MSM. Until that happens, I fear all the work we could possibly do about the BBV crap will go nowhere.

Until people know fully the magnitude of the problem, it can't get any legs.

And this is an issue that will cause **all** the citizenry to stand up and take notice.

But they need to know. And until the MSM - or as I like to call them, The Three Monkey Media - tells the whole story, it is just a simmering issue that will never boil over.

61. The war profiteering corporate news monopolies have not only NOT...
...told the truth about the last 3 elections ('00, '02 and '04), in 2004, they FALSIFIED election data. Late on election day, Nov. 2, 2004, the TV networks, acting in concert, ALTERED their own exit polls (Kerry won) to "fit" the "official results" derived from Diebold's and ES&S's SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code (Bush won)--thus denying the American people major evidence of election fraud, and squelching protests and calls for investigation.

Kerry won the news consortium's independent exit polls by a 3% margin (not counting vast Dem vote suppression--just polls of voters who made it to the polling booth).

Diebold and ES&S said Bush won by 2.5% (non-transparent, unverifiable result).

The news consortium DOCTORED those numbers to HIDE EVIDENCE that Bush did not win. (Alert bloggers caught screen shots--and it later came out that Kerry won in all the national and state exit polls.)

Diebold and ES&S are far rightwing corporations.

-------

Nobody told the American people that Diebold and ES&S had gained private control over the vote tabulation with SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code--code so secret that not even our secretaries of state are permitted to review it.

Nor did the Democratic Party leadership.

62. That sleaze Baker was allowed by the MSM
to repeat his mantra "the votes have been counted, and counted, and counted, and counted again!!" That was absolutelty untrue but he repeated it enough unchallenged so that the public began to believe it. They also let him get away with the completely illogical statement that machines should be trusted over humans in doing a recount. Hell, the automatic recount showed mistakes in the hundreds that cut Bush's lead by about 75%! But not a peep about the fact that the law called for the automatic recount and human beings were capable of interpreting ballots rejected by the machine if there was a legal vote on that ballot - no one challenged his ridiculous assertions and nasty partisanship.
Why he would be asked to sit on this commission when his only experience for this issue is stealing an election is astounding.
Carter has decades of election experience and should have had an equal to accomplish this report. :patriot:

88. I sure wish he would have said it before Al gave his concession speech!
I think that if more people would have been vocal with the TRUTH, in 2000 as well as 2004 instead of pussy-footing around we would not be in the mess we are today.

Look at all the people that could have stood up and spoken the truth, Famous Clergy, Past Presidents and the list goes on and on. Sure it is nice that he acknowledged it now but at what price to our country for waiting?

How many lives have been lost because those whose opinions are respected did not speak out!

I have been a supporter of Jimmy Carter, especially in his Humanitarian efforts after his retirement but his lack of public scrutiny and his willingness to give some sort of legitimacy to the Carter/Baker commission load of bs was very disappointing.

The time is now. Speak plainly, speak out loud. Over the last few days, Clinton criticized Bush but still didn't state the obvious and the same is true for Kerry and Carter.

Kerry blasted one or two aspects of the administration but failed to state that the white house was seized in a coup by the GOP and retained by the GOP buying our electional system.

Clinton said that he and Witt the former FEMA head both came from "areas that had a disproportionate amount of poor people" instead of stating the obvious. Bush doesn't have a clue, nor does he care about regular folks, if you aren't rich, in his book you don't matter, period.

And now Carter. He is sure that Gore won, but he won't say that Bush needs to be held accountable for vacationing and giving a rip how many poor Americans and tourists drown in New Orleans.

It is time for plain talk people.

This administration does not like anyone who is poor, not white, a woman, and not a Christian, in name only. That leaves rich, white, christian-talk the talk but don't walk the walk, men oh and anyone else as long as they have enough money!

102. Sometimes it's better to wait....
Criticisms just for the sake of criticizing are worth only of the Republican Party. In the beginning there wasn't the overwhelming mountain of evidence that there was now, mostly just a lot of suspicion by people who know how such things work. And there was probably no way to get absolute proof of something like that when you know they had to know they were looking at looooong prison stays if caught. But time has a way of revealing all. The thing now is not to somehow overturn the election but to make sure it doesn't happen again. Maybe that's why he's speaking out now. The proof is there and perhaps remedies can be offered now. In the meantime, knowing that the jig is up if the Democrats regain Congress, everyone should really be on the lookout in the months before the mid-term. We may even have another "national emergency" which we'll be expected to fall in line behind the president for.

110. Why didn't Dems stick up for Gore in 2000?
Actually the Congressional Dems that didn't stick up for Gore were almost universally white folks. Those that did stick up for Gore were never even acknowledged by him.

And why not:

Democrats are always worried that doing what they need to do to win the next election will make them lose the current one. But then, oopsie! They lose the current one too.

112. yeah that's really nice that he said that.....
but what about this recomendation for a national voter ID?
"The national commission, headed by former President Jimmy Carter, a Democrat, and former Secretary of State James Baker, a Republican, offered 87 recommendations on ways to make voting easier while strengthening ballot integrity. Their voter ID recommendation is, in a sense, stricter than the one passed this year by Georgia. It envisions a single, though free, government-issued photo ID card for every voter by 2010. Georgia accepts six government-issued IDs and offers one free to the poor."

118. Bush was never elected
or Cheney. They and their supporters have betrayed the United States. As long as Bush/Cheney are called legally elected, I won't fly a flag. I didn't trust Jimmy Carter when he ran for president, but I have come to admire and respect him --as long ago as he was in office, the rightwing slime balls were in action against him and derailed a good man's vision. However, I don't need anyone to tell me that Bush was installed illegally. I saw it live on CNN. And the bitter fruits of that decision will haunt all of us: this illegal government has made the poor poorer, this illegal government has legitimzed torture, this illegal government is killing innocent people. In their mouths words I love: democracy, freedom, faith, are made ugly and meaningless. I only want to see one headline and it is so depressing that so many years have passed without reading that these dictators have been overthrown.

121. Why this long?
The timing is interesting...because I bet he wanted to do the math and get his stories straight. Remember Pres. Carter was trained as an engineer. Engineers want to have their facts and data impeccable before making a conclusion/recommendation.

The telling part when Carter stated his revelation is when Bush's performance is at its worst: the fiasco in Iraq with no clear resolution, the debacle with FEMA in Louisiana, a faltering economy, and US recognized as #1 adversary against the UN. And for us DUers who've been watching things such as the Plame outing, limited prosecution of Enron execs, a looming energy crisis, etc. without much investigation or intervention from Congress, this revelation is just one piece of the puzzle.

If Carter had said this in December 2000, he would have been dismissed as sour grapes from a Democrat has-been. And for those who remember that long ago, the protests then were dismissed as such. Now I think more people have a clue of what they voted into...maybe Carter's words make more sense today!

122. '00 versus '04
Don't confuse 2000 with 2004.

In 2004, the skull n bonesman Kerry rolled over happily.
While Gore fought and demanded a recount despite the popular opposition and lack of support from his party.

Kerry had support and unity.

Gore had nothing. Even Lieberman wanted to give up.

Gore fought until the SC made the decision and then he handled his business like a statesman.
Kerry didn't even flinch.

Remember that in case Kerry and Gore run in '08.

Never trust a bonesman.
