Mississippi Democrats back Barbour

Haley Barbour, former Republican Party national chairman, yesterday won endorsements from four prominent Mississippi Democrats in his quest to unseat Democratic Gov. Ronnie Musgrove next month.

A victory by Mr. Barbour in the Nov. 4 election would help Mississippi Republicans maintain momentum in their drive to dominate politics in the once-overwhelmingly Democratic state, said state Republican Party Chairman Jim Herring.

The White House and the national Republican Party are closely watching the race. State party leaders hope that a Barbour victory will help the Republicans draw even with Democrats in the state Senate and add enough Republican seats in the Democrat-run House to sustain vetoes by Mr. Barbour should he occupy the governorship.
Mississippi Democratic Party Chairman Rickey Cole dismissed the value of the endorsements by former state Supreme Court Justice Jim Roberts, former Mississippi Supreme Court Chief Justice Lenore Prather, former Lt. Gov. Brad Dye and Maurice Dantin, who ran unsuccessfully against Republican Thad Cochran for the Senate in 1978.
The four were among 40 Democrats, mostly lesser-known local officials, from across the state who announced their support for Mr. Barbour at a press conference in Jackson.

Jackson–Earlier today, there was a press conference where individuals identified as Democrats announced their support for Barbour for Governor. State Democratic Chairman Rickey Cole issued the following statement in response:

" With all due respect to the individuals who have endorsed Mr. Barbour, clearly these individuals cannot seriously expect to continue to be considered Democrats after taking such a step. Haley Barbour is the most partisan Mississippi Republican of his generation, and has built a career out of vicious and unprincipled attacks upon Democratic candidates and the Democratic Party, the current campaign being only the most recent example. Many of us still remember his campaign of calculated insults against the legendary John C. Stennis.

Perhaps the Democrats' ultimate insult came last week out in California when Attorney General Bill Lockyer, a likely Democratic gubernatorial candidate in 2006, confessed that he voted for Arnold Schwarzenegger in this month's recall, along with 23 percent of all registered Democrats. Mr. Lockyer said he was drawn to the GOP's message of "hope, change, reform optimism."
Not a pretty picture for the Democrats. They've got a much steeper climb next year than they realize.

Many Democrats here, even ones in the state legislature, run as Democrats in state elections, because, statewide, the Democratic party does very well.

HOWEVER, in national elections, those same Democrats will support a Republican candidate.


I am with NSMA--we all know that the Repub party is pumping major money into their candidate's bank account, and I wouldn't doubt that several of those listed in the article received their pieces of silver.

Some of those guys just hate Musgrove, and they would do anything to get him out, including betraying their own party. They indeed are no longer Democrats.

These guys are all washed up, ex-politicians. Jim Roberts has been swamped in his only two statewide races, Brad Dye was defeated for re-election as lt gov a dozen years ago or so, Lenore Prather is at least 80 and has never run statewide. None retains any credibility as a candidate and none were ever particularly loyal to the Democratic party.

This story is typical Washington Times hype-they're blowing this WAY out of proportion.

Every republican in every state needs to be asked how comfortable they are belonging to a party that openly welcomes racists and bigots. Won't even know who those poeple are. I think this is much ado about nothing. Musgrove has been running a lot of strong TV ads. Frankly, I haven't seen either candidate do a lot of puclic appearances around Jackson. Barbour is appealing directly to race with his CCC Barbeque appearance, however.

1) This is mississippi. There's not a hell of a lot of difference between Rethugs and dems down there--for example, bith musgrove and barbour have been endorsed by national right to life and the NRA. Wan't mississippi politicans to have a seatlle politician's world view? Rename Seatle "Mississippi".

2) Becuase these folks are so close together, endorsements switch all the time based on "what's in it for meism". Haley Barbour probably kicked their brother's comapny some business. If they're electeds, he may have hinted strongly that he favors a bridge over hooglacaboogla creek or something. I bet Ronnie M's been endorsed by a few rethugs, too. But I bethit didn't make the Wash Times. Ya know what I mean? The Washington Times? Nah, they'd never make a big deal outa BS to help the GOP.....

Giuliani to visit: Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is next in a long line of Republican dignitaries who have agreed to come to Mississippi to campaign for gubernatorial candidate Haley Barbour.

Giuliani, who helped New York City overcome the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, will attend a Pascagoula fish fry Wednesday with Barbour, campaign spokesman Quinton Dickerson said.

The event, which will be free and open to the public, will run 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the City Park.

Dickerson also confirmed Wednesday that Vice President Dick Cheney will be in Columbus to campaign for Barbour on Monday. This visit is the second the vice president has made to the state for Barbour's campaign.
