Bush to see Rita preparations in Texas Friday

WASHINGTON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - President George W. Bush, criticized for a slow federal response to Hurricane Katrina, will visit Texas on Friday to get a first-hand look at emergency preparations for Hurricane Rita.

Bush drew heavy fire for the federal government's failure to adequately prepare for Hurricane Katrina last month, and for delays in getting federal resources to New Orleans even as stranded survivors on rooftops pleaded for help.

This time, the White House is scrambling to show Bush in command.

"He will stop to get a firsthand look at the preparations that are under way for Hurricane Rita and to show our support for the first responders as they get ready for the response to Hurricane Rita," said White House spokesman Scott McClellan on Thursday.

14. Exactly!
I am so sick and tired of hearing how recovery efforts in NOLA are put on hold so that security can 'secure' the area for this @ssclown can gladhand twice a week...

I remember back in the early spring when his visit to Rochester, NY shut down the major North/South interstate for him to travel from the airport to a Greece Arcadia High School to toot his social security plan...

4. Oh this is going to go over well!
I don't care if this was planned in advance but I can't imagine those in NOLA will appreciate this effort.

5. Could this storm head east?
Watch for Bush to throw his weight around. Had Al Gore or John Kerry been president, things would be different.

11. adding insult to injury...
I heard today on NPR that 9000 elderly and sick are being flown out from Texas, I assume by helicopter, because they can't make their own way out.
If this was such an easy thing to do, where were the flights for N.O. victims early on? It's a slap in the face to the Katrina victims to see how well prepared FEMA is for Texas....

15. The people in Texas will be fine. The live in a Nazi (republican) state...
They will probably get new homes, even if they were uneffected. This program will, of course be sole sourced to Haliburton. Maybe even free food and gas for the rest of their lives.

17. Maybe he can fly over I-14 North
Where hundreds of people have been stuck in traffic for hours. Cars have overheated and broken down, have run out of gas, and people are getting desperate. There have been fights at gas stations, and some who tried to evacuate and are stranded, who knows what will happen to them? Some success, Goodhair Perry.

18. psst! It's I-45
Maybe a photo op of Bush holding a can of gas filling the tank of a happy smiling lady with a W sticker would be nice. He could helicopter in and do it in his rabbit suit.

28. I'm laughing at myself...
Thanks for correcting my error, A-Possum. I was born in Houston, and have lived near there all my life...62 years now. About an hour ago, one of the local news stations said that some people have died while stalled in the traffic, trying to evacuate. What Chimp thought was going to show just how well he could handle a crisis is only going to point out how little prepared we as a nation are to deal with emergencies.

25. Yep.
I feel, as many do on this board, that it's getting pretty fucking old to gas up a 747-400 everytime this asshat wants to go on a field trip.

I think a better use of taxpayers funds would be for the shrub to take a roadtrip. Of course, since he's always loaded, he won't drive. Karl can take the wheel. Or Pickles.
