report that after the Green's eruption, the parliament gave Bush a huge standing ovation, which of course, is all that we'll see in next Fall's campaign ads. So 2 Greens got mean, Bush blows them off with a one-liner about free speech and enjoy a standing ovation. Now, we can view this with rose-colored glasses and pretend the standing ovation didn't happen OR we can see than once again, GREENS to more to HELP Bush than hurt him.

The Speaker Neil Andrew (a conservative) asked them to leave the chamber. They refused and he sent ushers over..and they sat and refused to move.

Then Greens senator Kerry Nettle attempted to hand Dubbya a protest letter while government MPs tried to jostle her.

Dubbya was then introduced to Mark Latham MP, opposition Treasurer who has called John Howard an 'arse licker to Bush" and Dubbya the 'MOST DANGEROUS MAN IN THE WORLD'. George didn't look him in the eye and passed on.

Oh and a policeman that was manhandling protestors got bitten by his own dog.

have been banned from the parliment for 24 hours, apparently (do it again, and we'll slap your other wrist!)
Greens keep this up, idealism, standing up for what they believe in, and they might actually become a real opposition party, instead of the check on the two majors they currently are. (in the Senate)
In Labour's defense, apparently they didn't clap. Some stood silently, others remained seated. Apparently.
Which brings up an interesting point. The only reason we have footage of the two Greens is because of the US media. Australian media isn't allowed to film "unparlimentary behavior" in the parliment, so the news programs had to get the US footage. Ain't freedom of the press wonderful?

It was so sweet to feel like my views were expressed directly to shrub for the world to hear. I can't say I've felt that way in a while in the US by national politicoes. Taxation with out representation sucks. Anyway, if you like what they did - thank them.

As to the interseting point, I don't understand the filming rule (I haven't been here long enough), but the ABC (public radio down under) seems to air parliment live when ever they are in session, and I've heard lots of "unparlimentary behavior" far worse than the heckling Brown et. al. dished out. If your in the minority, well then the majority views it as "unparlimentary" but if your in the majority, jeering and heckling seem fairly common (though still not filmed). It is not uncommon for someone speaking about some unpopular topic to be repeatedly drowned out by shouting etc, then called to order. It all seems more to do with culture than a lack of freedom of press, I mean the news was all over this showing it on all the stations, and culturally they have yet to divorse the queen down here, and most of the justice folks still wander around in wigs.

is that you can't photograph a politician in parliment without his permission (or something like that), because of the risk of catching him in an... er... 'unfortunate' angle (as can happen with still-shots).
And we have no intention of getting rid of the monarchy. It adds flavour to an otherwise increasingly coldly efficient world.

Rather than the direct parliment broadcasts (where boredom wars with contempt for the dickheads), I would suggest "Order in the House" on ABC TV, Sunday night (Monday morning) approx 1 am. Political analysis of the week gone, with a few dry observations.

It just goes to show how limited and weak Bush really is. He didn't even attempt to defend his policy in impromptu remarks. He does what he's told, completely dependent on his prepared script. He's like an actor who's told to step on this mark and repeat these lines we've written for you but, otherwise, don't think. What a lame response! What a stupid, look-at-what-a-nice-guy-I-am expression! How could anyone this lovable do anything bad? What a stupidly high-sounding "I love free speech"! What's remarkable about Bush, and why he's so detestable, is how timid he really is. Hiding behind this bully bluff of boldness.
