Ensign plans trip to Gulf to help with stranded pets
WASHINGTON -- Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., is planning to travel to New Orleans next week to pursue naming a federal coordinator to take care of animals left behind after Hurricane Katrina.

Aside from the humanitarian wish to rescue thousands of dogs, cats and other pets, Ensign, a veterinarian, said stranded animals pose a public health risk if left to fend for themselves.

"If dogs are left long enough they become packs," said Ensign, who met Wednesday with representatives from animal welfare groups in his Senate office. "They will transmit disease."

1. Where are our Dems on this?
I'm so disappointed w/ Blanco and the rest. Why are repugs the only ones who care about animals? Santorum has taken on this issue. The hideous George Allen introduced anti freeze legislation (adding a bittering agent to prevent animal poisonings). Shame on our dem leaders!!!
