Large fire breaks out in Galveston as Rita nears

GALVESTON, Texas, Sept 23 (Reuters) - A large fire broke out in downtown Galveston on Friday night, engulfing three buildings and sending flames shooting into the sky as the first winds from Hurricane Rita began whipping the coastal island.

Fire crews moved in to battle the blaze on the eastern side of the city that had been mostly evacuated in anticipation of the storm. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Winds of 60 to 70 mph (96-113 kph) pushed the flames across roofs of other nearby buildings and sparks tumbled down on firefighters, forcing them to stay well back from the buildings.

That was my first thought, too. There are always opportunists.

7. ah!
Yeah, it certainly would make no sense that the power lines have been knocked down and probably started the fire. Nah, it must be some type of insurance fraud. Maybe a conspiracy by the business owners.

:sarcasm:

8. well, i dunno....
it's possible there's an innocent explanation for the fires, but (as this is georgebushamerica!) it's much more likely about it being insurance fraud and a conspiracy of sorts.
'when you sleeps with dogs you end up with fleas' i think the wise saying goes...lotsa fleas in georgebushamerica :)

6. Hurricane insurance doesn't?
that is, if the owner even has hurricane insurance.

After the new bankruptcy laws go into effect, everyone is going to need mortgage insurance. Those that don't get it in hurricane areas are going to be mortally screwed.
