Anti-war protesters march in D.C., London

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Opponents of the war in Iraq rallied by the thousands Saturday to demand the return of U.S. troops, staging a day of protest, song and remembrance of the dead in marches through Washington and other cities in the U.S. and Europe.

...

"Bush Lied, Thousands Died," said one sign. "End the Occupation," said another.

While united against the war, political beliefs varied in the Washington crowd. Paul Rutherford, 60, of Vandalia, Mich., said he is a Republican who supported Bush in the last election and still does - except for the war.

...

A crowd in London, estimated by police at 10,000, marched in support of withdrawing British troops from Iraq. Violent clashes between insurgents and British troops in the southern Iraq city of Basra in recent days highlighted the need to get out, protesters said.

1. support bush except for the war - what else is there
oh yeah, destroy the environment, get rid of decent jobs, keep health care unattainable for many, send the price of gas and everything else sky high - there is are a lot of reasons to support bush - NOT!

Maybe it's the lie that bush is pro-life - that is the biggest joke he's pulled on the fundies yet.

9. Thousands march in London against Iraq war
LONDON (AFP) - Several thousand demonstrators have begun marching through central London calling for an end to the US-led war in Iraq and for the return of British troops from the country.

Protest rallies were also planned in Rome, Paris, Madrid, Copenhagen, Oslo and Helsinki, to coincide with a similar march in Washington.

The Stop The War coalition, which organised the London rally jointly with the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the Muslim Association of Britain, said it expected at least 100,000 people to take part on Saturday.

The protestors gathered outside the Houses of Parliament before setting off for Hyde Park.

11. 10,000 on Iraq march say police
Ten thousand protesters are taking part in a demonstration against the conflict in Iraq, according to Scotland Yard.
The organisers, Stop The War Coalition, told BBC News 100,000 were taking part.

Fathers of two British soldiers killed in Iraq addressed protesters before the march started near the Houses of Parliament at noon on Saturday.

The route has taken protesters up Whitehall and along Piccadilly before reaching Hyde Park, where a rally is taking place.

As the marchers walked up Whitehall, some campaigners shouted towards No 10: "Down with Downing Street, " and "Stop the bombings".

Thousands of Anti-War Demonstrators March in Washington, London; Rallies Planned in L.A., Rome

By JENNIFER C. KERR Associated Press Writer
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON Sep 24, 2005 — Opponents of the war in Iraq rallied by the thousands Saturday to demand the return of U.S. troops, staging a day of protest, song and remembrance of the dead in marches through Washington and other cities in the U.S. and Europe.

More than 2,000 people gathered on the Ellipse hours before the showcase demonstration past the White House, the first wave of what organizers said would be the largest Washington rally since the war began. President Bush himself was out of town, monitoring hurricane recovery efforts from Colorado and Texas.

"We have to get involved," said Erika McCroskey, 27, who came from Des Moines, Iowa, with her younger sister and mother for her first demonstration, traveling in just one of the buses that poured into the capital from far-flung places.

"Bush Lied, Thousands Died," said one sign. "End the Occupation," said another.

19. 100K people expected at war protest
100K people expected at war protest
Chicago Tribune

WASHINGTON - The anti-war movement, which has been gathering support in recent months, will get a major test of strength today as organizers hope to convene the largest peace rally in the nation's capital since the Vietnam War.

Small demonstrations have been common since the Bush administration began contemplating war with Iraq nearly three years ago. But throughout the summer, support for the conflict, as measured by various polls, has dropped, and peace activists hope a large demonstration of opposition at today's event will show that the movement has turned a corner.

"It's becoming clear to everyone that not only was this war based on a false pretext, it is not winnable," said Brian Becker, national coordinator for the ANSWER Coalition, one of two umbrella groups organizing the rally. "The anti-war sentiment is now the majority."

Today's "Bring the Troops Home Now" rally is the anti-war groups' first opportunity to demonstrate that a significant numbers of protesters are willing to travel to Washington to show their frustration.

Becker said organizers expect 100,000 at today's protest. He said about 1,000 busloads from every state in the contiguous 48 will arrive in Washington for the weekend's activities.

St. Louisans will join anti-war protest in Washington
By Ben Roberts
POST-DISPATCH WASHINGTON BUREAU
09/23/2005

WASHINGTON Dozens of people from the St. Louis area plan to join tens of thousands of protesters in Washington this weekend to voice opposition to the war in Iraq.

Charles Smith, 57, is among two dozen members of the St. Louis Instead of War Coalition who expected to start the 14-hour trip to the nation's capital this morning in a convoy of three rented vans.

Smith, a retired public school teacher and Vietnam veteran, has taken part in several anti-war protests in the past three years. He said he has started to see a shift in the public's perception of the war in the last few months.

"I think people are really waking up to the fact that we were lied into this war. And I'm hoping that with this action, people will take even more notice," he said

Eleven people from our area are going to rally for peace in Washington D.C. tomorrow.

They're joining thousands of people from all over the country. Holly Johnson and Karen Gutierrez are members of United for Peace and Justice.

They're urging congress to provide an exit strategy from Iraq. Johnson wants Americans to know that there is a large anti-war movement outside of what Cindy Sheehan is doing.

And Gutierrez hopes they can convince the administration that there is enough need for the national guard in the United States to bring them home.
