...The shake-up and weaker forecast caught some analysts off guard and left corporate-governance experts questioning whether O'Dell would be wearing too many hats...

"Maybe get down to a one-person company, then it would be appropriate," said James McRitchie, editor of Corpgov.net. "But I don't think it's appropriate when you're a public company, where there should be transparency and accountability."...

Sayan Chatterjee, professor of management policy at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University, said it's very unusual for a chief executive to take on four roles.

"I've never seen it in a large company of Diebold's size," he said...

1. You're going down Diebold!
"The news about troubles at Diebold also hit online opinion sites where voting-rights groups long have criticized what they say are security problems in Diebold's voting equipment.

U.S. Newswire carried a release saying that a whistle-blower, "Dieb-Throat," was spilling the beans on practices at the company.

The insider, when contacted by a reporter, described a company groping to get its voting-equipment business stabilized after a series of equipment malfunctions and sales setbacks.

"We have no response to that kind of nonsense," Jacobsen said. "

(Also, nominated because many people are following Diebold and would like to read this.)

4. When you won't show us how you calculate Vote=Vote+1...
Don't then expect us to trust your black box voting machines.

I am not against mechanical implementations of voting. I am against hiding the gears and their respective ratios. Diebold, in my opinion, showed their motivations when they refused to disclose their source code.

8. TRANSPARENCY!!!??? ACCOUNTABILITY!!!??? Har, har, har, har, har, har...
...har, har, har, har!

I laughed out loud.

But DO BEWARE. Diebold is NOT THE ONLY BUSHITE ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINE COMPANY THAT "TABULATES" OUR VOTES WITH *SECRET*, *PROPRIETARY* PROGRAMMING CODE. The other biggie, ES&S (even more far rightwing) does the same. As does Sequoia and all of them.

The fault here lay not just with Diebold and O'Dell, and the other election theft companies, it lay ALSO with both Democratic and Republican election officials who signed contracts with these companies permitting "trade secret," proprietary vote tabulation. There is a whole lot of corruption around this--state, local, federal, both parties.

Code so secret that not even our secretaries of state are permitted to review it.

Are the Democrats INSANE? (--that's what one would think at first glance--insane and suicidal). No. They are corrupt--and they are as beholden to Diebold and ES&S as the Republicans are.

---------

Here's the difference between Venezuela and the United States. Venezuela also votes electronically, but with OPEN SOURCE CODE--that is, anyone may review how the votes are tabulated. Not so in the U.S. of A.

Open source code = good president, good government.

Secret, proprietary source code = bad president, bad government.

It's pretty simple, really.

--------

We need...

1. Paper ballots hand-counted at the precinct level (--Canada does it in one day, although speed should not even be a consideration, just accuracy and verifiability)

or, at the least...

2. Paper ballot (not "paper trail") backup of all electronic voting, a 10% automatic recount, very strict security, and NO SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code! (...jeez!).

--------

Our elections are egregiously non-transparent and unverifiable. That is WHY we have no accountability in our government.

16. That's why this is nothing less than a major threat to our democracy!
... or Republic, whatever you want to call it. When the wealthy and powerful take control of our media AND our voting systems then they are essentially taking control of our system of government. First you'll see the media propping up candidates who otherwise would have no reason to gain in popularity. Then people will become accustomed to the fact that this candidate is simply popular, for whatever reasons. Then, when the votes are fixed, few will raise an eyebrow. Wake up people!!
