SEC chief recuses self from Frist stock probe

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Christopher Cox, chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, said on Monday he has recused himself from an SEC probe of sales of stock in hospital company HCA Inc. by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, a former congressional colleague of Cox.

"The staff of the Securities and Exchange Commission have commenced a review of sales of HCA stock by a blind trust established by the U.S. Senate Majority Leader," Cox said in a statement.

"Because of my service in the congressional leadership for the last 10 years, I have recused myself in this matter," he said.

Cox's campaign committee donated $1,000 to Frist's 2000 re-election campaign, according to Federal Election Commission records made available by PoliticalMoneyLine, a non-partisan group that tracks money in politics.

Sep 26, 2005 — WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Christopher Cox, chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, said on Monday he has recused himself from an SEC probe of sales of stock in hospital company HCA Inc. by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, a former congressional colleague of Cox.

8. Cox also popped up in this weird story....

about a con man in California...

"Rohrabacher, who represents California's 46th Congressional District, acknowledged that he put Medawar in touch with at least five other members of Congress, including Rep. Christopher Cox (R-Newport Beach), who was then head of the White House's Homeland Security Advisory Council. Cox is now head of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Rohrabacher said he and Cox dined with Medawar at a Washington restaurant to discuss the different agencies within the Homeland Security Department. Medawar and members of his production team made several return trips, and Rohrabacher helped get them access to representatives at several federal law enforcement agencies."

Yeah, that's the sort of eagle-eyed acumen an SEC Commissioner needs....

directly in investigations anyway? This strikes me as showboating, or smoke-screening of a sort.

And what are the affiliations and sympathies of the underlings who will be driving this probe which, as we remember, didn't begin until newspapers started saying rude things about Frist's transactions?

On edit: At least Linda Chatman Thomsen, who heads the Enforcement Division, seems like a straight-shooter, with a lot of solid career experience. No Brownie she.

Maybe Cox is just telling us all that he's not going to hassle the hell out of her.

12. SEC's Cox to recuse himself in Frist stock-sale probe
September 26, 2005

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Christopher Cox will recuse himself from an agency probe into stock sales by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Cox said in a statement Monday.

"Because of my service in the congressional leadership for the last 10 years," Cox said, "I have recused myself in this matter.

"The purpose of the recusal is to avoid any appearance of impropriety in the commission's consideration of this case," he said.
