Bill would give Bush $50B more for wars

By LIZ SIDOTI, ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate would give President Bush $50 billion
more for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of a $440 billion
defense spending measure a panel approved Monday.
<snip>
The House already has approved $45 billion more for the wars as part
of its $409 billion version of the bill providing money for the
Defense Department for the budget year that begins Oct. 1.

Both the Senate and House versions provide for a 3.1 percent pay raise
for the military, but the bills differ in other areas. The conflicts
must be sorted out before Congress sends the final bill to the
president for his signature.

Overall, Congress already has given the president about $350 billion
for combat and reconstruction in Iraq and Afghanistan and fighting
terrorism worldwide since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, according to
the Congressional Research Service, which writes reports for
lawmakers. That total includes $82 billion that lawmakers approved
in May.

4. Welcome to DU, Stevereno!
How low can he go, I wonder? What's beneath contempt? Whatever it is, that's what I feel for Bush. First off, the NOLA crisis is far, far from over, it's only going to get worse, and everyone knows it. How the House can approve such a thing is beyond my imagination.

How will we pay? My guess is they'll start ending the New Deal programs conservatives have been so eager to kill since their inception. The war on terra is more important, you see.

wonder how much of that $50B could be used to help rebuild New Orleans and the other areas affected

17. U.S. Senate panel clears $50 billion for Iraq war

U.S. Senate panel clears $50 billion for Iraq war

WASHINGTON, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Pushing to get money to the Pentagon for the Iraq war, a U.S. Senate subcommittee on Monday approved a $440.2 billion defense spending bill with a $50 billion emergency fund to finance the war into next year.

The fiscal 2006 bill from the Senate Appropriations defense subcommittee cuts $7 billion from President George W. Bush's request and is nearly $1 billion below current levels, excluding the emergency funds spent on Iraq and Afghan wars. Ted Stevens, chairman of the subcommittee, said a range of programs were trimmed to meet Congress' budget limits.

"It's an unhappy year," said Stevens, a Republican from Alaska. "I think there's a great deal that has to be done to bring our military into the posture it needs for the future and it's hard to do when things like (hurricanes) Katrina and Rita are on the scene."

Stevens said he also intends to use the defense spending bill to lay the groundwork for a system to activate the National Guard for major disasters in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

25. How much public education would $50 billion pay for?
How about dental care, or medical care?

How about all three?

And... why is it again teachers don't make $80-$100K per year? Police? Firefighters?

Why don't we overfund what we know is useful, and necessary? Why do we instead overfund things that only kill?

37. Exactly.
And we can't have universal healthcare in this third-world country b/c what, it's "too expensive"? But we can piss away billions of $$ on an insane, unjustified, illegal war. Absolute insanity. Exactly the opposite to fiscal responsibility (and nazis claim fiscal resp.), whereas funding universal healthcare (for instance) would be fiscally responsible.

32. That won't be enough money.
We are currently spending $200 million a day in Iraq. If they budget $50 billion for Iraq this year, they will only end up paying $135 million per day.

Either expect congress to give the military more money, or the insurgency in Iraq to flare up.

Bill would give Bush $50B more for wars

LIZ SIDOTI

WASHINGTON - The Senate would give President Bush $50 billion more for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of a $440 billion defense spending measure a panel approved Monday.

Reflecting a post-Hurricane Katrina debate about the role of the military in domestic affairs, the bill also will require that the National Guard provide a report on how Guard units in neighboring states can be used to assist those affected by natural disasters.

Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, the chairman of the defense appropriations subcommittee, said lawmakers and staff members were still working on the language, which will be added when the full Appropriations Committee takes up the measure.

"What we are looking at is when the National Guard should be triggered to come into a state to assist," Stevens said. "We aren't going to mandate it. We are going to ask for a report as to how it should be done and figure out if it is possible to develop a plan for that."

The House already has approved $45 billion more for the wars as part of its $409 billion version of the bill providing money for the Defense Department for the budget year that begins Oct. 1.

"We are going to ask for a report as to how it should be done and figure out if it is possible to develop a plan for that."

So, they're going to have a meeting to request a written series of meetings about how one would go about developing a plan...hopefully coming to the conclusion that a plan could indeed be developed.

Wow.
