Pentagon: Top Zarqawi Aide Killed
The No. 2 al Qaeda leader in Iraq was killed Sunday night, U.S. officials say. Abu Azzam, reportedly the deputy to Abu Musab al Zarqawi, was shot during a house rain in Baghdad, according to Pentagon officials.

As the aide to Zarqawi, Azzam was reportedly in control of financing foreign fighters coming into Iraq, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports.

According to Pentagon officials coalition troops raided the house in response to a tip. When Azzam opened fire, these officials say, he was killed with troops' return fire.

In related developments: The Senate would give President Bush $50 billion more for war in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of a $440 billion defense spending measure a panel approved Monday.

Amazing that we keep killing the "right-hand" guys but never the actual boogeymen. I wonder how long it will be before it turns out that this guy isn't actually number 2 but in fact once saw a picture of someone who claimed to have heard the name "zuchinni" somewhere.

19. Ho hum
You know, with all these "top aides" being killed or captured, you would think al-Qaeda would cease to be a force to be reckoned with and that we are making a dent in the so-called war on terror. But it seems that there as many "top aides" in al-Qaeda as there are * cronies in Washington, so no matter how many are killed or captured, there are simply too many others right behind them.

And while I'm on the subject, does anyone here really believe the FBI director when he reports that thanks to FBI intervention an L.A. jihad has been prevented. And this was due to information obtained in the course of gas station robberies. Excuse me? This sounds far more like terrorist- wannabes than gen-u-wine homegrown jihadists.

I would think that even those remaining in this sorry excuse for an administration would get tired of these antics. Forget shame for a moment. I couldn't stand the duplicity and utter inaninity.

So, this guy is not confirmed to be al-Zarqawi's #2 bad dude.

--Abu Azzam, reportedly the deputy to Abu Musab al Zarqaw--

--As the aide to Zarqawi, Azzam was reportedly in control of financing foreign fighters coming into Iraq,--

That's because there are literally millions of lieutenants, #2, and #3 bad dudes.

--What effect this will have on the insurgency remains to be seen. In the past, key Zarqawi lieutenants have been killed or captured without any decrease in the number of suicide bombings.--

53. Zarqawi aide killed in Iraq
Staff and agencies
Tuesday September 27, 2005

The second-in-command of al-Qaida in Iraq, Abu Azzam, has been shot and killed by US-led forces in Baghdad, the US military confirmed today.
Azzam, a financier and religious aide to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, was shot and killed on Sunday while hiding out in a high-rise apartment building in the capital.

"We had a tip from an Iraqi citizen that led us to him," said Lieutenant Colonel Steve Boylan, a spokesman for the US military in Iraq. "It was a joint US-Iraqi operation. We've been tracking him for a while."

The New York Times reported that CIA operatives were involved in the operation that led to Azzam's killing, but Lt Col Boylan could not confirm that.

It is also not known what nationality Azzam was, or whether he was alone when he was shot and killed.

Al-Qaida in Iraq, which is linked to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network, is one of the most feared militant groups in the country and claims responsibility for many of the deadliest attacks.

58. Hey, I'm cynical too. But I got this as an alert from "The Guardian,"
And trust them more than most. But I was once led to believe that Zarqawi didn't even really exist, that he was just a composite of many, no matter how many times CNN showed his pix. I've changed my mind on that, but still believe little. After all, only 2000 protesters are reported to have showed up in D.C., this past weekend. I know people who were there and know, as we all do, that this is being vastly under-reported.:grr:
