Stakes in Iraq rival those in
World War II, Gen. Myers says

Defeating the Iraqi insurgency is as important to the United States as winning World War II was 60 years ago, the Pentagon’s top officer said Monday.

Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, who will leave his post as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the end of this week, said the United States must win in Iraq because “the outcome and consequences of defeat are greater than World War II.”

During an interview with a small group of reporters at the Pentagon, Myers, 63, also said the Army is trying “to get the facts” about recent allegations of abuse involving U.S. troops in Iraq. “The people who made these allegations are known and are talking to the Army.”

On Sunday, Human Rights Watch released a report chronicling new claims of abuse, including charges that U.S. soldiers routinely tortured detainees to soften them up for interrogators.

25. Aren't ...
these comparisons to World War II ridiculous?

I'm trying to think of one instance in World War II where the U.S. fought a sustained counter-insurgency campaign in a region it moved into -- the only thing even remotely close is the mess the Brits faced in Greece when they moved back into that country in late 1944, and that was just a little-remembered sideshow in terms of the entire war and what was at stake.

Hell, even in Germany and Japan, there weren't any insurgencies against the U.S. occupation unless one counts the feeble swipes of the Werwolf movement.

Cheers

17. For Heaven's Sakes! General Myers has been just SO incredibly
spot-on about EVERY OTHER frickin' thing concerning this war.

Anybody know HOW he got to the position he's in? NOBODY has been more wrong, more often, about what's going on over there - except for maybe rummy, contradicta, dickie "last throes" cheney and the naked emperor...

:grr:

Did he pose in some catalogue and look good in a uniform, so Central Casting sent him out for this gig?

5. Right on, podner.
The way I've sometimes expressed that same thought, was along the lines of: "Iraq DOES bear a resemblence to WW2. But then, about 300,000 American GIs gave their lives FIGHTING a "Tomorrow The World" ideology, not enforcing it!". I have a few other phrases in mind along the same lines ... "Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuhrer!" is one.

Because in WW II we fought countries that attacked us or declared
war on us. Iraq did neither.

It is more like Germany invading Poland because they had taken

35. Withdrawing from Iraq would mean inviting another 9/11: US commander

http://news.webindia123.com/news/showdetails.asp?id=123171&cat=World

Withdrawing from Iraq would mean inviting another 9/11: US commander

US military chief in Iraq General Richard Myers, who is to retire on Friday, has said that the Iraq war had reached such a stage that withdrawing the (US) forces from there would mean defeat, and a victory for the al Qaeda, thereby encouraging the latter to launch another 9/11 on the US.

"If US forces were withdrawn prematurely and al-Qaeda dominated Iraq, then in my view we would have lost, and the next 9/11 would be right around the corner, absolutely. A victory in Iraq would be huge for al-Qaeda and their interests," The News quoted Gen. Myers as saying while addressing his last press conference ahead of retiring on Friday.

He added that extremists were using terrorism to try to break US will and drive American forces from Iraq. "As a nation, our best weapons are patience and resolve or, in one word, our 'will'. We simply cannot afford to lose the will to finish the job at hand," he added.

Myers' comments assume significance in the aftermath of last weekend's anti-war protests in Washington. Opinion polls in Washington have also showed growing public disenchantment with a war that has claimed the lives of more than 1900 US service members.

And who put us in this situation?

36. no
it would mean that we would avoid another 9/11 disaster because we stopped intervening in their countries. Nobody wants to tape dynamite to themselves if the enemy has retreated and renounced intervention in your country anymore. I would think that even fanatical jihadists would rather get to work on radicalizing their society and promoting their austere version of Islam than strap a bomb on themselves for no reason.

And even if they do, we still have a right to defend ourselves and secure our territory and borders, without having to intervene in their countries.

GET OUT.

Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 07:11 AM by The Backlash Cometh
Al_Qaeda wasn't there before. So, now they admit that they created their own problem?

As long as we're shooting the moon in predictions, here's mine: If we leave Iraq and install a Democratically elected administration that understands foreign diplomacy; and if we start conservation programs and seeking green energy alternatives, will it be enough to *delay* a 9/11?

I emphasize "delay," because I think if we believe that it can be avoided altogether, we're going to be led down the sheep path again.
