Myers Plays Down Value of al-Qaida Figure

The nation's top military officer said Tuesday that the killing last weeekend of a senior leader of the al-Qaida in Iraq organization will hurt the terrorists but perhaps only in the short term.

Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was asked at a Pentagon news conference with Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld about the killing of Abdullah Abu Azzam on Sunday.

"It will have some effect, but over time they will replace people," Myers said.

"There are others, foreign fighters, marching to the guns on a regular basis," who can be promoted to leadership roles, he added, although in many cases they are less experienced and qualified in planning and executing attacks.

4. Sure!
Plans of controlling everybody under the guise of defeating "terrorism" need to go on forever. No nemesis worthy of this status is to disappear with anyone in particular. Mix that with a little bit of truth and you have a very helpful press conference.

5. evil begets evil
These people need to get a grip on the fact that 'al-Qaida' exists in the United States, and is growing, even as a result of this Iraqi occupation. John Walker Lindh wasn't the beginning, and certainly isn't the end of it.

The occupation is a sham, and everyone knows it. The atrocities being performed in the name of the United States and "Freedom" is giving birth to more Lindh's every day.

10. But they got the headlines they wanted. Facts mean nothing to these
people. The truth is what we say it is today. Tune in tomorrow for tomorow's facts.

11. I think some in the Bush admin and the military...
...are getting hip to the idea that constantly trumpeting the latest high level kill and constantly predicting that the tide is turning is starting lose effectiveness.

Matter of fact, it's starting to invite ridicule from their own base.

Someone mentioned the freepers on this thread...I check that site pretty regularly (even troll there now and then) and believe me, there are plenty of people there who have had enough of the happy talk with no real progress. They're not buying it anymore. They snort and laugh every time a "Top Zarqawi Aid Killed" story crosses the wires.

They are starting to figure it out. Nobody likes to admit, especially to themself, that they were wrong. But more and more are recognizing how they were lied to, manipulated, and used.

It's coming around. We will prevail. We will get this awful situation fixed as soon as humanly possible.

13. AP has story calling him "No 2 Al-Qaida in Iraq."
I'd like to know how many times we've killed the "No 2" in Iraq. It seems endless.
