Chertoff repeats pledge to investigate hurricane response

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Americans deserve an explanation as to what went wrong during Hurricane Katrina response efforts, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Tuesday.

Chertoff repeated his and President Bush's previous pledges to have a full investigation into the federal government's hurricane response.

"We ... owe the American people a full accounting from all levels of government concerning what went right and what went wrong with the initial Katrina response," Chertoff said at the annual conference of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

...

"Just two weeks out from Hurricane Katrina, improvements in communication and coordination between levels of government were already evident," Chertoff said. "But that is only one step in ensuring that we identify the lessons learned from Katrina and make the necessary adjustments."

1. Why hold back. Why not go all the way and just let Brownie investigate.

2. Yes, we should let the people who fucked up investigate themselves & tell
us what they did wrong. Of course it will be a fully objective and not self serving investigation. Of course it won't disperse blame everywhere else but themselves.

Just like we should let them tell us how they're doing in Iraq and why they didn't find all the WMD they "knew" for a "fact" were there.

Letting the perps investigate themselves is always a good idea. Still waiting for Bush to find and fire those "involved" in the Plame leak...they've not only been found but promoted. Way to go.

:sarcasm:

3. Why is it that the corporate media aren't laughing out loud at this?
