New Orleans police chief resigns in wake of Katrina

NEW ORLEANS, La., Sept 27 (Reuters) - New Orleans' police chief Eddie Compass resigned on Tuesday, giving no reason for his decision a month after Hurricane Katrina slammed the city and set off a wave of looting.

"Every man in leadership position knows when it's time to hand over reins to someone else. I'll be retiring as superintendent of police and will be going on in another direction God has for me," Compass told reporters.

6. EFF links...there was a story on Paula Zahn about the cops in a
hotel who looted. They even have the generator that was taken from Tulane Hospital in their hotel room along with other items.

I also have information from a NOLA resident about the cops looting. IT is pretty big. Now that the residents are home finding their homes broken into stuff is about to hit the fan.

7. True but there are some bad apples on the force making it bad for
the superintendant.

AGAIN, I've talked to my EX who is in NOLA right now. The stories the residents told him when he returned were pretty bad as they relate to the cops.

Yes there are always more bad than good. But the NOLA PD has had a reputation even with murder as a part of their wrong doings.

SO, I'll back it up.

39. But there were reports of
rapes and all kind of violence coming from the evacuees at the dome and convention center, most of which proved to be untrue. I will wait for the investigation. I think people are inclined to believed criminality on the part of the police force because of its previous history.

25. there were also many other police officers who looked the other way
at the looting if it was for food and also saved helped in efforts to save people. To give the blanket statement "We all know that police were looting and shooting at innocent people...They are sickening" is not accurate.

the NOLA police force is known for being ruthless to the point where they actually killed people and were investigated by the FBI for it.

The looting stories regarding the NOLA PD are about to come out and it will be pretty big.

10. I remember hearing
during that time when the police were told to stop doing rescue and all start stopping looters. I assumed that was when many walked off the job... Who could blame them? What priority is that?

We heard of police looting and other officials looting. And I know some residents who looted took things they didn't need. But people who took food, water, clean clothing and shoes and so on...stopping them should not be more important then saving people.

16. True, in the Zahn show the Hotel guy showed womens dress shoes
the generator from Tulane Hospital and said that they guys would go out at night and rob the joints and in the daylight the regular old Joe's would see the placed busted into and they would go in.

He said they had so much stuff the back of the cop car was dragging the ground when they returned in the morning. After the first week they piled it in to a school bus and left town.

The funny thing is that the hotel guy reported it to the LA state police. IT really put egg in the face of the spokesperson for the NOLA PD because they were like we hadn't heard of anything like that.

Welp, I'd think not. Not while the cops are still staying in the hotel with guns. I don't think I'd turn them in to their own command.

not to say, right or wrong, would want to continue in their job, there, once they knew people were being constructively prevented from receiving life-saving water, together with food, or from leaving the place, whether a collection point/stadium or NO, itself; and then being blamed for not doing so - as well as all the rest of the villainy perpetrated by the federal government.

On further reflection though, I believe some of them no longer had anywhere else to go.

8. Earlier, when I peeked in on our favorite Idiots..
The Freeks were hooping and hollering about some Tony Snow blockbuster, concerning the NOPD, something about how they were discovering that as many as 80% of the cops that are reported to have skipped out really were never on the force to begin with. Which explains why they never showed up when push came to shove.

I never took the time to follow up on any of their links or otherwise follow up on their clues re the above stated assertion.

36. Some people find having a god around to lean on, talk to, blame things
for, or just to ask, "Why?" to be a comforting thing. If you don't need one, more power to you. Get used to it in others, though. Gods have been around a lot longer than you have.

40. I believe in God. If it's of interest to anybody. However I'm
not interested - in the least! - what you believe in. Or what the police chief of NO believes in. I'm not interested, either, to know whether he's got problems with his wife, whether he even HAS a wive, whether he's a transvestite. I'm not interested in his bad teeth and other health problems. In short: I'm interested in the man only as far as it concerns his official function, and his private life is HIS private life. And I don't want him to stick me in the face with it.

I've been associating with Americans for almost 40 years now. And it didn't use to be like this. And I wish the hell you'd get back to normal. I'm not talking of real religiosity; I'm talking of the PR bullshit which has soaked through all public life and which is exploiting spirituality. And *sigh* like everything else it will be swapping over to Europe.

Moreover you don't even strike me as an overly religious people even though God has become your every second word. You know: Thou shalt not kill, thou shalt love your neighbor as yourself, the sermon on the mountain etc. And though I don't doubt for a second that you have many intelligent, caring, exemplary priests/pastors/preachers in the US those that go public strike me as anything but Christian. To say the least. And I also see - ah well - some discrepancy between your political leaders' constant talk about God and Christ and praying and blessing - and what they're doing.

In my mind religion only has a purpose as a moral guide and as guide to spirituality; and while I expect religious leaders (like the Pope or the Dalai Lama, I don't mean those third class hate mongering money grabbing mega-church "leaders") to speak out everything else about religion should stay altogether private.

/end rant :)

44. First point - don't read what you're not interested in.
Second point - I don't know, if there is a God, or not. Third point - I don't like being preached to one way, or the other, about it. It sure doesn't bother me, though, for someone to say, "Thank God...," "God willing... " or, "Bless you, or us." It's not a big deal. (Although, I'll admit, I hate it when they say "God Bless America" and imply "and nobody else." That does irk me.) Last point - I will never deny another their need for a "higher power." To some people, to take away their god, is to take away their air. I try to live and let live. Now, a hypocritical, fundamentalist, lying sack-of-shit will get me going every time, but that has nothing to do with "god" per se, but with people claiming to "know" him, (or, her, or, it), better than I do and then behaving like the devil.

IF there is a god, I'm sure he/she/it has something special in mind for these types and I will leave it to him/her/it to handle it.

43. New Orleans police superintendent resigns
Wednesday, September 28, 2005; Posted: 7:14 a.m. EDT (11:14 GMT)

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AP) -- Police Superintendent Eddie Compass resigned Tuesday after four turbulent weeks in which the police force was hit by desertions and disorganization in Hurricane Katrina's aftermath.

"I served this department for 26 years and have taken it through some of the toughest times of its history. Every man in a leadership position must know when it's time to hand over the reins," Compass said at a news conference. "I'll be going on in another direction that God has for me."

As the city slipped into anarchy during the first few days after Katrina, the 1,700-member police department itself suffered a crisis. Many officers deserted their posts, and some were accused of joining in the looting that broke out. Two officers Compass described as friends committed suicide.

Neither Compass nor Mayor Ray Nagin would say whether Compass was pressured to leave
