DAN WANTS SECOND GO AT BUSH

September 28, 2005 -- DAN Rather wants to reopen the investigation into President Bush and the National Guard story that resulted in the Memogate scandal and led to his early departure from the anchor desk.
But his bosses at CBS have forbidden him to go back at it, he said.

"CBS News doesn't want me to do that story," Rather said during an interview that aired on C-SPAN Monday night.

"They wouldn't let me do that story," he said during the shockingly frank interview with former NBC newsman Marvin Kalb.

Rather continues to insist that the story was correct and suggested in...

2. Too late now, Danny!
Personally I feel that "Memogate" was the final nail in the coffin for Kerry last year. It was enough to make the rethugs realize that we were desperate and would do anything to get Bush out of office, even if it came down to something like forgery and they used that to completely destroy us.

Dems thought a real veteran could counter a faux fighter pilot who had likely deserted the Alabama Air National Guard. We certainly did not nominate him for his speeches.

56. True, but I don't think Kerry ever called * on the carpet for it.
I read recently (paraphrasing) what Kerry should have said:

"I didn't make our Vietnam service an issue. They did. I served my entire tour; he kept dental appointments. I went. I came back. I spoke out about what I saw. All the president has to show for his service is a couple of fuzzy check stubs."

I'm a vet, I wanted Kerry to f*ck him up on this and he didn't. Hence the swiftboating was a success.

105. Yeah, but the whole thing was
that she said that the memo itself was a forgery, even though the content was more or less accurate.

It's clear what happened. Someone forged documents that would incriminate Bush re. his National Guard service. But the forger inserted one or two deliberate flaws in the forged documents. And then, as if on cue, the Freeper "Buckhead", or whatever his name was, "pointed out" (he was told ahead of time what to point out) that the memos contained type that apparently was not yet available on IBM Selectric typewriters of the document's alleged year.

We know that "Buckhead" was part of some convoluted plot because he blogged his "discovery" about an hour after the 60 Minutes broadcast concluded. The document was shown on air for like, five seconds, and so there's no way "Buckhead" could have been able to normally decipher the carefully injected flaw.

115. Oh, sure it was.
Not everything is a Karl Rove-inspired conspiracy.

The memos were genuine; there's no question of it. The idiots who tried to label them forgeries were committing a con on anybody not familiar with typewriters and typesetting.

As an experienced typist, I could tell they were typewritten, and most likely they were typewritten by Killian himself, given the fact they were not professional-looking documents.

But the phony bloggers were worried about the fallout from Bush's National Guard Service, and so they had to cast doubts on the whole story by focusing on a peripheral matter.

AFAIK, Rove created a forged paper, sent it in the pile of real documents, the media swallowed it, then the whole thing got discredited for this 'fake' document.

66. and there was the suspicious very quick
"discovery" of the type font that was used in the memo, a font that didn't exist in the 70s when the memo was supposed to have been written. This was a set up pure and simple.

It was right out of the Rove playbook. He once stole official stationery from his opponent's office in Texas and sent out a notice of a beer party on it, so he could embarrass the opponent. The opponent LOST because of it.

One false sentence: "The font did not exist." That's all it took for many people to dismiss the whole thing.

A blatant lie. You are not the only person who used it, and there are people who didn't use it who know it existed. So much for journalism. "The font did not exist" ended the entire investigation.

111. But what I don't get is
that Dan Rather could have used the proof that you and others who rebutted me obviously possessed to counterattack. If this is a lie, why didn't Rather defend himself with the facts?

I like to offer up cold, hard facts to my RW adversaries, even if they don't because then I can say "You do not have the facts, just hearsay, here are the facts." Otherwise, it's just a back and forth "Did not"/"Did so" sparring match.

At the time, I thought that the font issue was a plant by Rove, deliberately done to discredit a true story. I believed it was a set up. Some people were lined up to call Rather on the font issue after he went with the story, and we were left to scramble around. Rather's response "WEll, it was true anyway" just didn't hack it.

My point is we've got to do better with our facts, otherwise we are just lamely arguing about it almost a year after it happened and we got W again for prez.

Why did Rather drop it? Honestly, if Rather wouldn't support himself, what was left?

The simple statement that the font didn't exist is untrue. That really has nothing to do with the content of the document, which was verified by that woman whose name I forget.

Rather dropped it. That alone made it a non-issue.

please get me the factual evidence of this. I want to have it to use against all my RW adversaries.

But what I STILL don't understand is if Rather had the evidence that what he said was true, he didn't use it. Why? Why would he damage his reputation so late in his career to do this? Believe me, I know my RW adversaries and they would ask that same question. We had better have a good answer and I'm not hearing it from this thread.

117. What in the world do you expect to hear? The font is not the crux of the
matter.

Did you watch when Rather interviewed that woman (whose name I forget)? She said the content of the document was factual. That was Rather's cue to track it down in whatever way necessary. He dropped it.

If Rather can't or won't stick up for himself, why would you waste your time convincing "adversaries" about font? Since the piece of paper (a photocopy) is assumed to be a forgery (photocopy of a forgery) what matters is verifying the content and context. (Even if that means coming up with another document.) And you won't be able to convince anyone of anything because you don't have the piece of paper to show people the font, and show people that IBM Selectric (some types) had the same font.

Re forgery: If the font exists, does it prove the document is real? A forgery could have been made using an existing font. Know what I mean? This was a photocopy. Was it the font people think it is?

I know this is a long winded answer without giving you a link to a font discussion, but I'm on dial up, and don't really care about the font. I care about Rather dropping it. He made it look false when he did that. Now he is complaining that the document was true (or its content was true). He's the one who made it look false by dropping it as soon as it was contested.

If I were you, I wouldn't waste time trying to convince diehard Bush supporters either way. Wait for an investigative journalist to actually do something. (And don't hold your breath.)

The answer you are not hearing from this thread you need to hear from Rather. Why did he drop it?

these diehard blowhards. I know I won't. But I've learned that when I have facts on my side, I can do the most damage to RWers arguments and I've satisfied myself by doing my homework. I's fun to throw factual evidence at them and then ask "What've you got?" They are forced to slink away or huff and puff lamely. An amusing spectacle!

I agree with you about Dan Rather. His lack of follow up is bewildering. Let's hope he will now.

123. I'm relieved to hear you are not trying to convince them.
I think they are unconvincable, since facts don't count much to them.

If the search function is working, search DU. Very recently, there was a thread about Rather and AWOL, and in the thread was a link to an IBM Selectric site, or something similar.

Even if you are not trying to convince them, I think you should try to prevent them from focusing on the "sideshow" instead of the heart of the matter: Was Bush AWOL?

I gave up on that a while back. I now just try to wear them down with facts, which they don't have!

It's amazing how little they have. You can really reduce them to shreds if you have the facts, which is why I like to be armed with them. They just wilter in the face of facts.

I doubt if minds are changed. However, they are certainly challenged.

There was no conclusive proof that the document was a forgery, the entire thing was that Rather was unable to prove their authenticity. Of course, the freepers and the 'liberal media' hid that fact well and harped that it was a fake.

41. Somebody in the RW created the fake document
The claims of forgery were almost instant. There's no other reasonable explanation for the fake and the instant "proof" that it was fake.

What gets lost in all this is that the secretary who allegedly wrote the real memo said the facts were correct, forged document or not.

60. I spotted the problem, too.
I remember being yelled at online that first night because I said that we had to explain the "th" or we were in trouble with the documents. ANY older secretary would have noticed the "th".

But people researched and found out that there were machines that could do it, we just couldn't prove the TANG had them.

Also, Rather never asked the secretary who replaced her when she was out sick or on vacation.

So far as I know, we STILL don't know that the documents were forgeries.

53. Nobody proved the memo was a forgery.
The provenance was questionable, but there WERE proportional spaced typewriters in use in those days. I used one.

More importantly, nobody ever even attemped to contradict the facts of Bush's "special" appointment to TANG & his abandonment of his duty.

I hope Mr. Rather goes after junior hot and heavy about the cronyism, cover up, and junior's rap sheet on his cocaine arrest during his National Guard days.

But I imagine the contract he has with CBS prevents his pursuit. Mr. Rather is as wounded as Captain Ahab hunting Moby Dick. This is not over by a long shot, Mr. Rather will hunt relentlessly even if the cost is his life, as with Captain Ahab.

Even if the memos are fake (and that's not proved), every bit of evidence says the story is true. The main evidence against the memos -- the secretary -- insists the story itself is true.

Surely, Rather can find another venue to get the story out. He should leave CBS and write a book.

The Story that Didn't Run
By Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball
Newsweek

Wednesday 22 September 2004

Here's the piece that '60 Minutes' killed for its report on the Bush Guard documents.

In its rush to air its now discredited story about President George W. Bush's National Guard service, CBS bumped another sensitive piece slated for the same "60 Minutes" broadcast: a half-hour segment about how the U.S. government was snookered by forged documents purporting to show Iraqi efforts to purchase uranium from Niger.

The journalistic juggling at CBS provides an ironic counterpoint to the furor over apparently bogus documents involving Bush's National Guard service. One unexpected consequence of the network's decision was to wipe out a chance-at least for the moment-for greater public scrutiny of a more consequential forgery that played a role in building the Bush administration's case to invade Iraq.

A team of "60 Minutes" correspondents and consulting reporters spent more than six months investigating the Niger uranium documents fraud, CBS sources tell Newsweek. The group landed the first ever on-camera interview with Elisabetta Burba, the Italian journalist who first obtained the phony documents, as well as her elusive source, Rocco Martino, a mysterious Roman businessman with longstanding ties to European intelligence agencies.

Although the edited piece never ended up identifying Martino by name, the story, narrated by "60 Minutes" correspondent Ed Bradley, asked tough questions about how the White House came to embrace the fraudulent documents and why administration officials chose to include a 16-word reference to the questionable uranium purchase in President Bush's 2003 State of the Union speech.

But just hours before the piece was set to air on the evening of Sept. 8, the reporters and producers on the CBS team were stunned to learn the story was being scrapped to make room for a seemingly sensational story about new documents showing that Bush ignored a direct order to take a flight physical while serving in the National Guard more than 30 years ago.

38. Well, that's interesting--that Rather admits being censored! But I
wish he would address a more important issue with regard to the war profiteering corporate news monopolies, and that is their FALSIFICATION of their own exit poll data on election night--ALTERING their exit polls (Kerry won) to "fit" the "official result" derived by Diebold's and ES&S's SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code (Bush won)--thus depriving the American people of major evidence of election fraud, and squelching protests and calls for investigation.

That hurt our democracy a lot more than suppression of the story of Bush's cowardice. The American public had sussed him out already, had seen through all the crap and the propaganda, and threw this bum and his Cartel out of office. And, to this day, they don't know that they did.

I'm sure the TNG thing was mortifying to Rather, and he wants to set the record straight. And he's right--it should be set straight. But, hey, Dan, we've got some far worse problems here! People dying and all, at the hands of these criminals. Please look into how all the TV networks, acting in concert, DOCTORED the exit polls!

The greatest journalistic crime ever committed, in my opinion.

Only to have it turn out to be accurate (it's been suggested that the man may have been saying "Goniff", not "Kenneth", but he did have a belief that the media was beaming signals into his head).

Not getting on you, just adding the rest of the story for those who might have missed it (like I did the first time)

59. He may get the go-ahead sooner than we think
Bush's reputation is now somewhere between numbers runner and nickel-bag streetwalker, and there's enough whoop-ass in the pipe to kick him to the curb a couple of times.

Rather is NOT a man without resources. He will have his revenge, and it will be devastating, shared, and sweet. I imagine a dozen or more of his loyalists from all parts of the journalistic world are quietly compiling intelligence, assembling evidence, and making ready to treat the Boy King and his lackeys like so many little green footballs.

Bush is going DOWN. My only concern is for how much of the republic he will take down with him.

73. The only disconnection has been in the public media
The "debunking" was fake from the get-go. Anyone who worked in an office in the 1970s knew that the big bosses all had typewriters that could do proportional fonts -- it was a major status symbol, and no self-respecting CEO would be without one.

Since the story of the fonts was the "magic bullet" in this story, it was clear it was a sham. The whole case hung on the proportional fonts, and the disappearance of the mole was the capstone. It led the MSM to say that Rather was concocting evidence, but it takes no great insight to recognize that he had been set up by a bunch of amateurs, and they got away with it because nobody wanted to scrutinize the Boy-King.

This is when the news media started defecting. They saw it all too clearly, and knew it was a warning that they, too, had better stay in line. When a bunch of wankers like Little Green Footballs dot com could be used to decapitate a major journalist, the flag decal started to peel off and the swastika underneath became visible.

A lot of people are deluding themselves. They still can't believe that a gang of thugs with such little discretion could seize power and occupy the White House.

The gloves will soon come off, but it's a fight Bush & Co. can't possibly win. They lost their chance, and blundered past their window of opportunity. But they will go down hard, throwing wild punches and landing them where they can.

When the extent of the damage is finally understood, Bush will get the blame for every major crisis for the next fifty years, whether he deserves it or not. The Republican party had better have a new ideology ready by then, or they will cease to exist in a few years. The denouement of the Memogate affair won't be the first, or only, piece of the undoing of Team Bush, but it will accelerate the fall.

But nobody wants to be under the great edifice of neo-Conservative power when it falls. It will take literally hundreds of thousands of careers down with it. Even liberal Democrats ought to stay away from it. The ruins will remain radioactive for decades; hopefully, there will be no violence accompanying the fall, but the bastards don't give up easily.

Allbaugh was Bush's chief of staff back in Texas -- and he's the guy Burkett was responsible for putting Bush's TANG files in the dumpster.

In light of the new scrutiny on Allbaugh for landing hefty post-Katrina contracts for Halliburton and the Shaw Group, it wouldn't hurt to revisit that as well.
