Sec. of State says ice skating, piano occupied her during '60s (drugs?)
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/nation/20050928-1501-rice-counterculture.html

ASSOCIATED PRESS
3:01 p.m. September 28, 2005

WASHINGTON – Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said she was too young and too busy to feel much effect from the social changes of the late 1960s.

"I was very young at the time of the counterculture. I was 12 or 13," Rice, 50, told an interviewer this week. "And I was a music major. All I did was play the piano and ice skate. And so I don't think I focused very much on the counterculture. "

Rice did not answer Fox News Channel reporter James Rosen's question about whether she ever did drugs. She suggested he return to asking questions about foreign policy.

32. Unfortunately, there were conservative kids who could have
gotten through without being touched by the times. If they had been kept in a sheltered environment and if that environment had a touch of arrogance and superiority in contrast to those "unwashed liberals," well, it would explain everything that we know about Condoleeza Rice.

7. Bullshit also, Denver was a very political hotbed in the early 70s
When she went to college and then got her masters
Denver and Colorado had a very strong civil rights, anti Nixon, counter culture at that time

In 1967, the family moved to Denver when her father accepted an administrative position at the University of Denver.

In 1974, at age 19, Rice earned her B.A. in political science (cum laude) and Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Denver. In 1975, she obtained her Master's Degree from the University of Notre Dame. In 1976 she switched her party registration/affiliation to the Republican Party.

33. Are you serious?
She finished high school a year or two early, wrapped up her BA in 3 years, while taking grad courses? I assume she didn't do her entire MA in 1 year, just getting in all the required classes would be rough. And I'm trying to make reasonable guesses about how she shortened the time.

If so, I suddenly tend to wonder if she's not far from wrong. That kind of schedule, you either get sucked into the counterculture at age 13-14, and probably don't emerge for a while, or you're vaguely aware of it from some question on a test. (Unless somebody wants to be freeper-like, assume she did nothing, and her B.A. stands for 'black and admitted'.) Doing drugs a couple of time in the early '70s hardly qualifies as "counterculture".

41. When she was going to school for political science
Political Science's biggest talk was on Nixon and impeachment, South Afrika apartheid was also the talk of the day, now where the hell was she on that issue. Did she know who Steve
Biko was I doubt it. I got my Pol Science degree at the same time. A lot of local Black issues came up in Denver at that time.

I'm saying that even being busy in Pol Sci. you had to pay attention to what was happening on the planet let alone what was happening in Denver. Denver has a black population and a culture but I know her father never lived in those areas. She was in a bubble then as she is now.

I'm saying she's Uncle Ben's 10 minute instant white Rice which is not as nutritional as brown rice which takes much longer to cook and has better taste.

85. A discipline is one thing, a way of life is another.
You can study the counterculture and not be affected by it in the least.

I know lots of PhDs in Slavic languages that can't order a beer in any of them. But they can discuss crossover phenomena, the semiotics of case syncretism, or proto-slavic sound changes with ease.

If she was as busy as the way her c.v. was presented suggests, she had no real time to be black, white, or anything but a student.

Then again, I also have this odd academic view from the 1920s that culture, language, and skin color are correlated, but there's no causal connection.

she's undeniably brilliant. She was a professor and Provost of Stanford by 35, not exactly a cut rate school, you know?

here's the wiki entry:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condoleeza_Rice

I have friends who did the Notre Dame Master's program in a year, it's the standard length for many master's programs in IR (the London School of Economics, for instance, has a 18 month program, the extra six months are field work, that can be waived with the right experience)

80. Here's a definition of 'counterculture' from a major textbook publisher
The term counterculture referred to various alternatives to mainstream values and behaviors that became popular in the 1960s. Among these were experimentation with psychedelic drugs, communal living, a return to the land, Asian religions, and experimental art.

http://www.ushistoryplace.com/glossary/c.html

So I would say they don't consider the civil rights movement part of that either.

I certainly hope not...MLK openly opposed the war...and he's not the only example.

From the usual hagiographic CNN blurb: Rice -- who was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and spent most of her childhood there -- said the confluence of race and poverty is a vestige of American history.

So I guess she never heard of the Sixteenth Street Church or the Edmund Pettis Bridge either.

I'm a clueless white guy who was growing up in South Carolina about the same time. And I sure heard about those places.

And don't believe the hype about her sterling career as a Provost at Stanford University, either. One of the things she did there was what most of us would call "union-busting," IIRC.

44. Any boyfriends? At all?
I don't believe that I have seen any article on the web, in newspapers, magazines, or even TV about Condi and any men (I am excluding Smirk, of course). It's actually sorta sad. I wouldn't hold it against her if she had some guy on the side. I mean, so what?!

61. Sounds like she sacrificed everything for ambition.
No boyfriend, husband, family, or fun. I almost feel sorry for her. She's probably lonely, or will be when she's old.

Misplaced as they may be. Just seems odd that there are no signs of fling, past romance, few boyfriends, anything for that matter. Is she a virgin? I don't think I have ever seen one!

53. I can't believe I'm speaking in Condi's defense, but
I was in high school from 1965-1968 and in college from 1968-1972, and I never used drugs during that time. I didn't smoke tobacco, either, although I did drink wine and beer at family parties, in accordance with my family's European background.

I went to a conservative high school while living with strict parents, and then to a college that was religious and politically liberal but socially conservative. Maybe about 20% of the students at the school used drugs, but the rest were on the straight and narrow.

I had my first joint in 1973, when I was in graduate school.

91. My experience is so close to your's Lydia LeftCoast...but Condi is Wrong
How COULD SHE HAVE IGNORED what was going on in the SOUTH when she grew up. She would have had to have blinders on and plugs in her ears.

I AM Southern...and left there during College...but EVEN "I" Was Engaged Enough...to fight for Condi Rices. But, she didn't give shit about her fellow human beings.

Why did we bother? If this is what it's come to.

You know why? Because "some of us" believed in "Equal Rights for All." Sadly Condi Rice and Clarence Thomas and the Whitey's who betrayed us on the Left all were in the SAME SCHOOL OF THOUGHT.

Why did we defend them? When, they seemed to have been MORE THAN CAPABLE of Defending THEMSELVES and TURN AROUND on US!

It's really hard to fathom how little folks remember about how they got to where they are. They would say it's by their "bootstraps" and "hard work." I would say...F**k OFF! You bite the hand that helped you...and some of us sacrificed to help you and now you even forget us. :-( Sad Times...Sad Times.

54. I'm 47, and I was a music major in a conservatory...
I remember plenty of parties and an abundance of discussion about counterculture, despite the fact that it was 1977.

Somebody, somewhere is going to come out with the truth about Ms GoodyGoody. It's only a matter of time.

75. B..U..L..L..S..H..I..T!
A black child in the 60's not exposed to or educated about "counterculture". That's horse-shit. I could see if she was a poor black child who was raised in the ghetto, where her mama and mema had been on welfare and no father figure was around. But she wasn't. I know damn well her parents made sure she knew what the fuck was going on around the world, especially the USA. No way she didn't know about Martin Luther King and his movement. And if she says he knew about his movement, then she knew that drug smoking hippies support his movement.

It's one thing to say you didn't do drugs because you were too young..but it's another thing to act like you are stuck on stupid.:spank:

78. When did she say she didn't know that?
What she said was: "I was very young at the time of the counterculture. I was 12 or 13. And I was a music major. All I did was play the piano and ice skate. And so I don't think I focused very much on the counterculture. "

She said she didn't focus on it very much. She never said she didn't know about MLK, or that she didn't know that "drug smoking hippies" supported him. She just said she didn't focus on the counterculture.

84. Condi is black and that unaware ????
I'm a year older than she is and I was very much aware of what was happnening in the country. I remember the day MLK was murdered. She's black and claims not to know much about what was happening then??? Bullshit... She doesn't want to have to admit to herself that she has failed in living towards the dream of Martin Luther King. She doesn't want to have to admit that what was once a nation moving towards a more equitable society was commandeered by men like her boss's family.

90. I'm 50 and the counterculture didn't have much to do with me, either.
I was watching Alfred Hitchcock and Twilight Zone reruns after school, not the news, and much more involved with my friends and school work than what was going on in the world. I smoked a little pot after I got married and have never done any other drugs. The first demonstration I ever went to was a pro-life rally during the decade of my delusion after I became a born-again Christian Repuglican at age 24. :hurts:

I'm living proof that people CAN change for the better. :)

92. Has Condi changed for "the better" though. That's the question...
and I honestly can't see her and believe that she has. But, I changed for the better FOR HER.

I guess I shouldn't expect a "return for my support of what she went through" because "times have changed." But, since I didn't forget her...I wonder why she forgot me, and us who supported her right to go to unsegregated schools and the college of HER Choice? We even supported free scholarships (not that Condi needed to take it or even was involved with any "affirmative action programs" but still many folks who couldn't go to college were enabled to go when the "Civil Rights Movement" make reforms possible.

I'm not asking Condi to remember those who fought for her in a "payback way" but sheesh...she could at least try to remember her roots and have some sympathy..and feeling that many folks died in Mississippi, Alabama and the rest of the Deep South for her...and families were ripped apart because of the cause of "Civil Rights." She and Clarence Thomas seem to feel they were born with rights that only folks TODAY in America can look too. And NOW both of them are fighting to take it all away, again.

 I don't have a way to deal with this...as someone who grew up in the South when the battle over Intergration vs Segregation was tearing the country apart.

94. If her family was wealthy enough to afford ice skating
in the sixties, a time when most figure skating clubs REJECTED blacks, then I can understand why she cannot relate to the problems of most black people in the US. She WAS absent during the civil rights movement. She was sheltered by wealth and was probably not even allowed to associate with other black people. She probably wasn't even allowed to mention MLK's name in the house at that time. Her Uncle Tom father and Aunt Jemima mother had to keep their place in silence or else face the loss of place in the community (the figure skating club).

How do I know all of this?

I am black and currently an officer of a figure skating club. Figure skating clubs, for the most part are still insularly narrow things and many of them have a history of refusing blacks, hispanics and other minorities. In fact, the very oldest clubs in the nation now admit to the practice. If Rice was skating in the sixties, it is very nearly a miracle that she was allowed to do so. Money HAD to have changed hands for her to skate. Period. It has only been since about the eighties that blacks were fully welcome in figure skating. Don't believe me? Then read about Mabel Fairbanks (one of the greatest skaters in history, who was not allowed to compete) or Richard Ewell.

http://www.livejournal.com/talkread.bml?itemid=12118381

US Figure Skating isn't proud of this and is working to improve the image. Now, blacks and other minorities are more than welcome and the number of black skating judges is also rising.

The bottom line fact is that if Condy was skating in the sixties (at the same time that I was smelling tear gas during riots in the Northeast--we are about the same age), her family had to kiss a lot of white asses to do that. Period.

Condy's not a shining example of heroism or support for civil rights, if you ask me. . .
