Rev. Moon urges bridge linking Alaska, Asia
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002527631_revmoon29m.html

Challenging U.S. leaders to build a 51-mile "peace" bridge and tunnel from Alaska to Russia, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon rallied hundreds of Seattle supporters last night in an effort to bolster a religious movement best known for mass weddings.

Moon delivered a rambling, 45-minute sermon at the Bell Harbor International Conference Center that heavily criticized the United Nations and called for the end of war and the reconciliation of religious differences.

Moon offered no specifics on how a combination bridge and tunnel could be built or funded.

... Moon declared that his teachings helped Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin become reborn as new people.

3. Does Moon and or his org pay taxes?
One of those things I really need to educate myself about one day. If you are a religious organization just what is tax exempt beyond the church itself? Are the business enterprises of the church also exempt? Just askin caus you need those nasty taxes to build big bridges and tunnels. Halliburton won't build 'em for free.

33. That's correct
In fact, when Moon was in danger of having his church's tax-exempt status pulled about 15 years ago, the Christian Coalition types rallied to his defense. Not because they liked him or his church, but because they knew that if Moon would be forced to pay taxes, so would they.

I think a land connection to Asia and Europe would be incredible. I would love to drive to Paris or Rome. It may be closed part of the year but for at least eight months a year it would be a spectacular highway.

But we have to finish the ladder to the moon first.

18. Sure it does after all Moon says he's Christ
" THE UNIFICATION CHURCH teaches that on Easter morning 1936, Sun Myung Moon had a vision. The 16-year-old Korean, a Presbyterian, was praying when Jesus Christ appeared to him. Jesus informed Moon that God had selected him to take up where Adam and Eve had failed, to complete a task that Christ himself couldn't finish: uniting and leading humanity as God intended. Moon was to be the Third Adam, the Lord of the Second Advent, the Messiah of the Second Coming. His assignment: to create a theocracy that would reign over the earth."

19. As much as a nutball as Moon is... a train bridge could be
a good thing for everyone in the long run... provided that it's made for an electrical train and they think far enoguh ahead to make sure that it's completely enclosed so that it is protected against the elements.

Even a nutcase can have a good idea once in a while... too bad he doesn't seem to get the idea overall on a lor of other things.

26. Right
Once you get over to the other side, you still are in the middle of nowhere.

You'll have to get a plane to get somewhere else...unless you plan to drive the Alaskan Highway down through Canada, and then come on into the States.

Fun idea but the utility is just not evident.

if such a bridge were feasible, and rail lines included- it could be very useful.

57. Not always
And in the mean time, you will have spent an awful lot of money. Projects like the Channel Tunnel between the UK and France have not been commercially profitable, and that's at one of the busiest sea crossings in the world. Alaska and Siberia are both very lightly populated, and a long way away from the major population centres - which can send things to each other happily by sea. The world economy is a long way away from being able to build things because it sounds like a nice idea - we have to be able to say why the project is better than what we've got now.

Then, when it's finished, all the Unification Church members can begin to march from Los Angeles to Wellington. Once they're all inside, we can seal the tunnel at both ends. :eyes:

32. A bridge would be doable, getting to it wouldn't be.
In case anyone wasn't aware, there are NO roads or rail lines to Nome or the Bering coast right now. The ONLY way to access that location is by boat or plane. Considering the military importance of this area during the Cold War, don't you think the government would have built a road or rail lines if they were easy?

Connecting a road or rail line from Fairbanks to Nome would involve crossing two mountain ranges and some of the nastiest frozen wastes in the country. We're talking about hundreds upon hundreds of miles of nothingness. To build that, we would need a HUGE economic imperative.

To be honest, the primary purpose of this thing would be freight traffic, and to make sense it would have to be cheaper than ships to use. Since trains can only haul a fraction of the load of a cargo ship, it's unlikely that they'll be the cheaper option any time soon. Without freight traffic, the bridge wouldn't be economically worthwhile.

46. Bridge to nowhere
I read that link you provided and I'm adamantly against it's opinion of the so-called "bridge to nowhere". I live in Anchorage, and I have lived in the "Valley", the towns of Wasilla and Palmer which this bridge is intended to connect to. It's needed. The "valley" is no longer just a small suburb of Anchorage....it's becoming a large town all of it's own. Literally thousands of commuters travel the 40 mile plus commute from the Valley to Anchorage twice on a daily basis, and there is a huge amount of commercial and private traffic as well, all clogging a single 3 lane hoghway that gets so backed up it is not uncommon to see 10 mile long back-ups if just a single car breaks down or what have you. It's a nightmare in other words. The Valley is growing at an unbelievable rate....building out there is tremendous (it is the fastest growing area of Alaska and probably one of the fastest in the nation). This bridge would end up PAYING for itself through reduced travel times, reduced accidents, and higher productivity all around for the entire region. It's not a bridge to nowhere. It's needed infrastructure.

Oh wait, there isn't one. How about Rev. Moon starts by funding a capital venture for providing a twice-daily ferry service and we'll see how much business it does before we buy the bridge.

Talk about your public works pork projects, this bridge would be the King.
