Gen.: Al-Qaida seeks to use WMD in Mideast

WASHINGTON (AP) — Al-Qaida is the main enemy to peace and stability in the Middle East and the terrorist group is seeking to acquire — and use — weapons of mass destruction there, a top U.S. commander in Iraq told Congress.

"The enemy that brought us 9/11 continues to represent one of the greatest dangers to this nation," warned Gen. John Abizaid, the commander of U.S. Central Command.

He was testifying alongside Gen. George Casey, the most senior commander of coalition forces in Iraq, before the Senate and House Armed Services committees. Also to testify Thursday were Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and Gen. Richard B. Myers, the outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

President Bush sent the group to Capitol Hill to try to convince lawmakers — and their skeptical constituents — that the United States is making progress in the war. The back-to-back hearings in the House and Senate are part of a White House effort to bolster slipping public support for the war.

5. Well then why did we invade Iraq, where there was no AlQaeda?
I guess we are supposed to forget that there was no AlQaeda in Iraq before Bush invaded it and threw the doors open.

Jesus, we are ruled by idiots.

Yes, indeed.....and they are going to pull another 9/11 in the Middle East. Apparently the Pentagon expects to use their WMD in Iran and elsewhere.
Gee those evil "al qaedas" and their "wmd" just always get the slip on us somehow...

21. Gen.: Troop Withdrawal Hinges on Iraq Vote (more Casey)

Gen.: Troop Withdrawal Hinges on Iraq Vote

WASHINGTON - U.S. troops could begin coming home from Iraq next year, but it depends on conditions during and after the upcoming elections there, the top U.S. commander in Iraq told Congress on Thursday.

The remarks by Gen. George Casey, along with similar comments he made a day before, represented a softening of his earlier assessment that a "fairly substantial" pullout could begin next spring and summer.

Casey said the result of the upcoming Iraqi referendum on a new constitution on Oct. 15 and December elections will affect whether conditions on the ground will be appropriate for withdrawing U.S. troops.

"The next 75 days are going to be critical for what happens," Casey told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Just think of how well trained these soldiers will be thanks to us training them.

The civil war will be much more professional.

24. US Commander: Only one Iraqi battalion fully capable
WASHINGTON - The top US commander in Iraq acknowledged Thursday conditions may worsen in Iraq because of Sunni opposition even if a constitution is approved in next month's referendum.

---

The last time Casey reported to Congress several months ago, he said three battalions were fully capable.

"We fully recognize that Iraqi armed forces will not have an independent capability for some time, because they don't have an institutional base to support them," he said. "And so Level One is one battalion."

"It was three. Now it’s gone from three to one?" interjected Senator John McCain, a Republican from Arizona.

30. I would suggest this book for the general and for all of us:
"The Culture of Fear: Why Americans are Afraid of the Wrong Things" by Barry Glassner. It does not deal with this issue but it shows how we are being manipulated. In example, when they tell us crime rises 50% are they talking about a specific area. The small town I live in had two murders in the last 20 years. When the second one happened the murder rate rose 100% but it did not reflect the state of crime in our town. This is how the bushies keep the people living in fear.
