Canada's army needs more soldiers, money - report

OTTAWA, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Canada's military is suffering from a "legacy of neglect" that has left it undermanned, underfunded, and unable to cope with the threats and demands of today's world, a Senate committee said on Thursday.

The Canadian Senate's standing committee on defense and security, a vocal but relatively uninfluential lobbyist for the military, said years of government neglect had undermined the armed forces, accusations that Ottawa dismissed.

The committee said government promises to step up funding would kick in too late, and more money was needed urgently.

"The Canadian military has never flinched in responding to urgent calls for help, but in recent years it has been forced to stretch itself like a worn-out elastic to fill the enormous demands that have been placed on it," the report said.

3. Do you think it could be because we don't have any enemies?
Seriously, I've thought about this before....We really don't have enemies and have therefore grown lackadaisical in our commitment to maintaining a functional army....It's just a thought........

5. Oh, it HAS been neglected, certainly. That is a longstanding fact.
It's just that not many people can bring themselves to be that broken up about it because what would they be doing instead? Fighting in Iraq? More troops in Afghanistan? That's little Dutch boy finger in the dyke type stuff.

6. Budget time again
They say the same thing every year, whenever money gets discussed.

We don't need a WWII military though, and this is the easiest way to change it over.

7. Why, who are they going to attack?
Seems to me that Canada could spend their money much better than on the military. Besides, if they were attacked it would likely be by the US and all our troops are abroad. And they could probably raise a militia from all the US military who have taken refuge there.

8. what threats?
Who the hell is threatening Canada?

Ask Costa Rica or Japan who the hell is threatening them, and they got more to worry about (Japan has China and NK, and Costa Rica has the other Central American Republics to worry about).

Really....Canada is a lucky country. Lives faraway from dangerous rogue nations with powerful militaries, and nobody wants to hurt them.

Well, of course, that's if we exclude the U.S.

10. Something else the U.S. has in common with Canada, then
Although I wouldn't put it past those sneaky Canuck bastards to put out this kind of disinformation to lull us into a false sense of security, all the while they're plotting and planning to stage a raid on International Falls.

Look, I'm just saying that they've already swiped large portions of our Great Lakes and Rocky Mountains. Who knows what can stop these maniacs?

11. There does seem to be a case for more
Canada does not face many threats, but I have read that the cuts are undermining their historical peacekeeping role.
